Show Arnie's wraps up women's Softball title while upsets tighten men's race by Kandy llanskat As the Softball season winds down to its final month, the women's race has loosened, while the men's has tightened. , The women have only one night of play left, next Monday, but with or without those results Just Amie s has clinched the title again. As if to show that there is no contest. Just Arnie's beat the Mad Hatters Sunday in a makeup game. However, upsets in the men s league have muddied the playoff picture (playoffs start Aug. 10). Doc's and Penn West had been leading the league, both with unblemished records. Jans Mountain Outfitters had been in hot pursuit with only one loss. Then on Wednesday, July 11, Penn West knocked off Doc's 13-2 to take a commanding lead in the league. Two nights later Jans gave more of the same medicine to Doc's, handing the team its second loss of the week. At this point first, second and third places in the standings were well defined. But then in the shocker of the week Just Razor's Bums beat Penn West Monday night. Now Jans and Penn West are both tied with one loss each, with Doc's in third with two losses. P.C. Accommodations 18, Ryan's 2 P.C. Accommodations lodged another tally in the win column Wednesday night, July 11, by thrashing Ryan's 18-2. P.C. Accommodations virtually clinched the game in the second with three runs to make the score 5-0. PC. Accommodations' Larry Spurgeon had a homer, a double, and five RBIs. Ryan's only bright spot came from Kent Niederhauser who had a double and a single and scored the team's only two runs. Deer Valley 9, Just Razor's Bums 8 Gary Kilgore, Harold Barnes, and Lou Berry combined for three runs for the Deer Valley team in the bottom of the first to set the tone in this game. Deer Valley gradually built its lead up to 7-5 after five innings, 9-5 after six. Then in typical Bums fashion Rod Deaderick, Buddy Macchia, and Mitch Cummings drove in three runs to bring the Bums within one at 9-8 in the top of the seventh. But John Winston flew out for the third out to end the rally. Penn West 13, Doc's 2 Wednesday night's third game saw Penn West score four times in the first inning, with Scott Vultaggio slapping a double and Scott Marshall a home run. And with Doc's batting in a slumber that was all that was needed. Penn West added nine insurance runs for good measure. Jans 13, Doc's 3 Then for an encore on Friday night at City Park, the Doc's squad was mashed again by Jans. Jans, shrugging off the Friday the 13th stigma, won the coin toss and chose to be home team. One Doc's run crossed the plate on the bats of the brothers Jessie Schaub and Rick Rodriguez, but Jans was undaunted, coming back for three on the bats of Larry Goodings, Randy Hanskat, Norm Smith and Robo Svoboda. Svoboda had a good evening at the plate, going three for four with one homer. After Jans dumped in seven in the fourth to make the score 11-1 this game was no longer in doubt. Coconuts 1!), Knd Run 6 This game was won early on by the visiting Coconuts Friday night at City Park. Phil Congino, Kevin Long, Jeff Richards, Kirk Atzek, Ken Elliot and Scott Siemon all had hits in the first, helping the Coconuts to nine runs in the inning. The End Run was never in it. Sneakers wins by forfeit over Janeaux's Coconuts win by forfeit over P.C.M.C. Just Arnie's 11, Mad Hatters 7 This was the clincher for Just Arnie's, but it didn't come easy. They went up 5-0 after one, but then the Mad Hatters inched back in. Two runs came in for the Hatters in the second on a single by right fielder Kathy Whalen and an error by Arnie's shortstop Lynn Brown. In the third Arnie's scored two. But the Hatters came back with three in the bottom of the inning, then added two more in the fourth to make the score 7-7. But Arnie's rallied for one in the fifth and three more in the sixth, while the Hatters could cross no more. This game was played on Sunday as a make up for an earlier rained-out rained-out version.
