Show STEAMER SINKS IN MISSISSIPPI St. Louis, July 11. The river steamer Cape Girardeau struck a snag and sank to the bottom of the Mississippi Mis-sissippi river early today at Turkey island, fifty miles south of here. One hundred and fifty passengers were aboard and all were taken ashore safely. Tbe boat was returning from Commerce. Com-merce. Mo. Many or the passengers were women and children. They were asleep when the boat hit tho obstruction. ob-struction. The alarm was given bj Captain Leithe. The passengers crowded on tb deck and were taken to the shore in boats. Later tbey rrere brought to St. Louis by train. Tho Cape Girardeau was built In Madl6on, Indiana in 1S99. She was 250 feet long and carried a crew of forty-five. The boat is owned by tho Eagle Packet company of SL Louis. On the evening of May 11, th steamboat City of Saltlllo, struck a snag and went to the bottom of the river, fifteen miles below St. Louis Twelve persons were drowned by tho sinking of tbe boat. |
