Show SUBMARINE ON A TRIAL TRIP HAMILTON. Bermuda, July 10. Tho U. S. submarine Salmon, which sailed from Quincy, . Mass., at 2 o'clock on the afternoon of July 5, made St David's light at 1 o'clock this morning. She remained until 5 o'clock nnd took a pilot aboard, arriving ar-riving at Hamilton three hours later. The Salmon encountered a rough sea on the 4th and 5th, but suffered no damage. She fully demonstrated the practicability of the submarine for long ocean voyages. Tho distance between Quincy and, Hamilton Is about 800 miles and the Salmon made an average speed of between eIx and ten knots an hour. The seaworthiness of the little craft was proved to tho entire satisfaction satis-faction of the representatives of the officers aboard and the builders. The Salmon will proceed from Rer-muda Rer-muda to Hampton Roads, but the date of her sailing has not yet been fixed. Tho submarine Is under command of Lieutenant Commander Davison and carries a crew of 21 officers and men. |
