Pettcrson, tho county coun-ty superintendent, who, In a few brief remarks, announced the purpose of tho gathering and Indicated the bearing bear-ing the instruction will havo on ac-j tual work In tho school room. Professor J. IT. Lin-ford, of tho Utah Agricultural college at Logan, explained ex-plained the operation of the extension department of which he is head and further defined the relation it bears toward development outside tho school room. He explained how the department depart-ment operated advantageously for all. I The address was technical in character charac-ter and was designed to be instructive instruc-tive to teachers and pupils alike. Prof. James L. Barker, of the Weber We-ber Academy, followed with an impromptu im-promptu address on the subject of institute in-stitute work. He urged teachears to make it a part of their program to attend institutes, holding Instruction to be derived from tho oxchange of ideas in such an assembly to be highly beneficial. Practical demonstration in music as a part of the regular school work was given bv fifth and sixth grade pupils of the Pleasant View school.undcr the direction of Mrs. Alice Chatclain, who is in charge of the work in that school. Morning Session. Tho morning session was brought to a closo with addresses by Superintendent Superin-tendent Peterson and other board members. The superintendent spoke of "Relation of the Home to the School." He stated that since no institution insti-tution can hope to succeed without cooperation co-operation as its fundamental principle, it was necessary that parents make it a point to become acquainted with the teachers. This acquaintance, ho pointed out, creates a common Interest in tho development of the child and children's minds and enables tho teachers to arrive at some definite conclusions con-clusions as to what methods should be employed to obtain maximum results from study. I Tho superintendent stated also that this common interest tended to overcome over-come the disadvantage that naturally attends instruction of groups, the collective col-lective unit receiving the same benefit as by individual instruction. The application ap-plication of modern methods of instruction in-struction also tends to preclude the possibility pos-sibility of ieglectlng individual students. stu-dents. The training prescribed for the class unit is identical with that received re-ceived by individual. Application on the part of the student also assists in obtaining maximum benefits and argues ar-gues convincingly for the sucess of the school as a wholo. In tho course of his address the " educator pointed out that the common interest created by the acquaintance of the parent and the teacher enables the teacher to become cognizant of the character and mental capacity of tho pupil, and knowledge along this lino is necessary to promoting rapid but thorough development. In the session this afternoon, Lo-Roy Lo-Roy Cowles of the University of Utah, delivered an address on "Standards of Elementary School Work." The concluding session of the institute, insti-tute, from 9 a. m, to 12:30 p. m. tomorrow, to-morrow, will be devoted entirely to departmental instruction in which the teachers and principals will be directed direct-ed as to the course to p'ursue in their work in the school room.
