Dr Hartley was a splendid specimen, speci-men, of man, physically, mentally and morallv. He was fighting Rourke and his crowd both because he loved humanity hu-manity and because he loved a fight. "Mr., Temple, will you tell us at the City Club what you know about" the building code the Rourkes are hatching?" hatch-ing?" he said over the telephone. "We'll give you a worth while audience, audi-ence, and if there's anything to be done to scotch the code we'll do our best. What do you say?" "There's nothing will give me moro pleasure," David said grimly. "Any time you say." David spoke before the City Club at its next meeting on the evils of the proposed building code. It gave Cora, a thrill to see the grave, earnest, highly efficient men and women of the City Club listening with serious attention to David. The causo of public welfare in the presence pres-ence of these pcoplo became a splendid splen-did burning command Instead of the nebulous, ineffectual thing she had al-wavs al-wavs thought It when she thought of it at all. It thrilled her most to see David In a strange and splendid phase to her fighting for once for Btakes that were not his personal stakes. For the first time she now felt, as did David, the thrill of fighting shoulder to shoulder shoul-der with strangers for a common good against a common enemy. She vowed silently that she would fight loyally. An account of the meeting and David's speech appeared in the morning papers. pa-pers. Cora and David were reading them at breakfast when a brusque rap at the door preceded the entrance of Timothy Rourke. "Morning," he said curtly, removing his hat. "Can I speak to you alone for a few moments?"- He nodded at David. David motioned to a chair. "I want my wife to hear anything you may have to say to me," David said dryly. Rourko hesitated, then nodded briskly. "All right. Temple, I've been hav-ing hav-ing you looked up some In New York before you went with Mr. Carter Brett and in Colony Park. And what I learned won't make good reading for you and your wife." David nodded to him to go on. "It concerns several ladies, Mrs. Brett and an actress woman by the name of Wanda Laurence. Have 1 said enough?" "By no means," David replied sharp- ly. "Go on." "Well, Temple, if you don't stop shooting off your mouth about that building code of ours we'll spring some of that choice personal and Intimate history of yours In tho local papers. Now what say, uh?" He cocked his cigar at David and looked through narrowed sinister eyes. David arose and wont to the door. "I've got only two little things to say," he said quietly. "One is, look up the slander and libel laws pretty carefully before you do this." And the other is9" Rourke sneered. "This!" David threw open the door. "Get!" "When Rourke had left David and Cora looked at each other. In David cthflghtlng blood was seething. If he were alone ho would have thrown Rourke down the stairs. But as he looked at Cora there came to him the vision of her reading garbled, malicious ma-licious gossip and skillfully woven lies about himself and Rose Bret and Wanda. A sickening welter of slimy slander; a pawing over of old and hidden wounds. And the vision caused the heart to sink. SIMPLE WRITING TABLE. To make a combination portable writing desk and lap board procure two boards twenty-four Inches long upon which gingham has been wrapped in the dry goods store and strip them together. This makes a good light sewing board of handy size and weight. Then make a cover of cretonne to fit the board open on one end. Down one end on the top side put two pockets pock-ets (7x5 inches) for stationery, the top one being used for envelopes and stitched for pen. The remainder of the space is used for blotter (20x14 1-2 inches), which is slipped Into three-cornered pockets. A handle at tho top makes it convenient con-venient to hang or carry when slipped over tho board and tied on the open end. It is very useful to take to a cool place on the porch and the entire cost is little. CHOCOLATE MARSHMALLOW ROLL.
