The branches for the company at San Francisco and Los Angeles will be completed very shortly after the large structures in Ogden are finished in time to lake care of the Increased output of the packing plant. Plans for these two branch establishments are now being completed in Chicago by Architect Henschien, who perfected perfect-ed the plans for the Ogden plant. James Stewart & Co., the general contracting company handling the big building work, is employing a force of 140 men at the present time with about thirty-five other workmen employed em-ployed by the subcontractors and the railroad companies, which are now placing tracks to tho new buildings. This number of employes has only slightly varied during the entire time of construction and will' probably be increased as the work progresses during dur-ing the next several weeks. Alterations in the shipping departments depart-ments of the packing plant have become be-come necessary as a result of the new addition. Instead of having the tracks enter from the north as previously, pre-viously, the railroads are having them built directly from the east through (ho union stock yards and between the main buildings of the packing house. Two loading tracks are being be-ing layed, one to handle the output from the new buildings and another I to (nko care of tho business from the older section of tho plant. New loading load-ing rlat'orms are being built along the north and east sides of the older building and in the near future such changes will be made as to make the present pmoko-hoii.se into a part of the shipping division. In tho niain building work, the power pow-er plant of thrco stories and tho tank house of four stories are now practically prac-tically completed, while brick work is progressing rapidly on tho third unit of tho structures tho cooling and cutting cut-ting floors at the extreme eastern end of the new buildings. Foundation work has been startod on the central I unit of the building and this will pro-! pro-! press with much rapidity as soon as ; tho old railroad trackage is romoved and the present tank house takon away, both occupying part of this I site. ! The immense structures for they ; are really four separate buildings ; combined into one cover a length of 2R0 foot and a width varying from 100 foot for the main buildings to 60 foot foi the two smaller divisions. The main building with Hg two units is 200 ret In length and 100 feet in width, five stories nnd basement In height; the tankhouse adjoining is CO by 40 feet in dimensions and Is three stories in height while the power house is of tho same dimensions excepting ex-cepting that It is not quite so high. I These buildings are all constructed I of conrreto and steel, with some brick work, while cork In used practically prac-tically throughout for insulation. Sev-oral Sev-oral carloads of the shipment of ten carloads of cork have arrived at the plant, this being the heaviest purchase pur-chase of this material ever made for any western plant. Scarcely a piece of wood Is included in the permanent structure, this assuring both safety from fire and also tho highest standard stand-ard of sanitary conditions, one feature fea-ture that has boon thoroughly considered consid-ered in the construction of the addN tion. I The new buildings will be used ex-; ex-; clusively for the handling of pork, In-' In-' eluding the output of tho "Mountain," "Neclar" and "Sego Lily" brands that I have beon pushed by the company ; for several years. A capacity for 1250 ; head of hogs has been arranged, this to be increased later by the building t of another addition which will in-! in-! crease the cooling room space. The I killing floors and several other divi-; divi-; sions of the plant located In the cen-; cen-; (ral unit are so built that they have a ' capacity of 3000 head of hogs a day ! but as the entire intermountain country coun-try does not supply enough hogs at the present time to even provide for the initial capacity of 1250 hogs each day immediate construction of this has beon deemed inadvisable. The expansion will bo mado as soon as the market conditions warrant such development. Shifting of tho pork-packing division divi-sion to the new buildings will permit of the older units in the plant being utilized entirely for the handling of beef and mutton. This will give a capacity ca-pacity of 1500 sheep and 300 head of cattle each day. To handle the cattle, sheep and hogs for the packing plant will require re-quire the use of approximately 30 incoming in-coming cars and IS outgoing cars each daj', a development that will greatly increase the railroad busi ness out of Ogden. The packing plant operates about 300 days of each year, giving a total yearly capacity in the new plant of 450.000 sheep, 375,000 hogs and 00,000 cattle. To secure this immense amount of llvestook, the development of the intermountain country particularly particu-larly as a pork-raising center will be necessary. Pork-raising has proven one of the most valuable features of farming life in sections where packing pack-ing plants are located and even for many miles around. When the Ogden Packing & Provision Provi-sion company was established there were practically no porkers in the state of Utah, a very limited number being raised. However, as the company com-pany has developed its plant there have been increases. The officials of the Ogden Packing & Provision company com-pany are confident that with the In crease of facilities and certainty of a steady market for the livestock, that tho farmers of Utah, southern Idaho and other neighboring territory will Increase the number of hogs and will provide enough not only to operate the new plant but also to warrant further fur-ther enlargements. |
