Show I OGDEN HIGH MEETS I WITH DEFEAT BY GRANITE I The Ogden high school rootbail team met its second defeat of the season Saturday afternoon at the tOIenwood park grounds, when the team from the Granite high school tcok it into camp The score was 19 to 0, but the defeat was not by any means an inglorious one, as superior weight and experience were the big ' factors in Granite's victory A big crowd of rooters watched the game and, while the Ogden part oi ; was disappointing when tbe local! several time failed to "pull off" a play that looked good the playing was 1 hard and Interesting all the way through The oubensns of opinion was that Coach Abhton of Granite has a team that works like a w'ell-t w'ell-t led machine while the Ogden team showed that Judging from the "dope" on the other teams In the league it will bo able to play them to a stand-i stand-i stfll in the games yet to coin - One, criticism of the work of the Orange and Black war. that Captain Mattaon and Quarterback Dee seemed to be unable to agree on the plays to "pull" on several occasions causing a loss of time and a probable misunderstanding misun-derstanding of signals on the part of the other members of the team While this may not have been tin-case, tin-case, it looked that way from the sidelines. The Granite team worked the for ward pass perfectly several times for long gains and, its interference was also fine, while tho locals showed the need of more practice In both of these plays. Oft defense, the Orange and Black showed up strong, holding their heavier heavi-er opponents tight on the line, almost every time a massed play was tried The team arso showed up well In blocking and every player was in the game all the time. The particular star of the day was Waldo "Wink" Hastings, Ogden's scrappy left end His habit of watching watch-ing his men when Ogden had the ball and the mun with the ball, when Granite hud it, proved that he had the right idea all the time nnd through his Interference and tackling Ogden gained ground and Granite lost, time after time. Experience and fighting spirit figured in Hastings good showing, which was considered fine enough to get him a place on the all-star team of the high school league. Of the Ogden backflcld. Streeper. Dee and DeYoung are now men and their playing Saturday showed that they have plenty of grit and speed, while "Bish Kav's experience stood the team in good stead throughout the game. The Ogden line gamely bore the brunt of some heavy playR without giving waj hardly at all, until tbe third quarter, when it was outguessed out-guessed by the visitors and left several sev-eral holes open. Of the linemen, Mat (son. Falck. Coonev and Menzies played exceptionally well Jim Hamilton proved a tower of strength to the Granite team and Quarterback Stalton's work also came in for a lot of attention. These two plaers made the three touchdowns, touch-downs, one heady open play, with the fine interference of their team -mates. Tho fjrst touchdown came in the first few minutes of the second quarter, quar-ter, after the two teams had played each other to a standstill Id the first period. Hamilton was sent around the end for thirty yards being downed down-ed by Mattson and Streeper. The run dazzled the Ogden team and the ball was advanced ten yards on three downs and then Staiton was pushed over the line Thorum kicked goal, making the score 7 to 0. The second score came in the same period After the ball had changed hands a couple of times after the klckoff. Granite worked it close to the Orange and Black goal and worked it across by hurdling, for which they were penalized 15 vards. A forward pass took them back 10 yards and three downs took them to the two-ard two-ard line Here they lost the ball and Falck kicked it to the 40-yard line Penalties resulted in Granite being forced to kick on the fourth down and In the scramble for the ball a Granite plaver recovered it mass play sent Hamilton over the line for the second touchdown The klckover was unsuccessful and the half ended a couple of minutes later, la-ter, with the score 13 to 0. The second half was plaved mostly on the Ogden team's territory with the locals fighting for every inch. Hastings got the ball from the kick-off, kick-off, but was downed before he could get under way. Three downs and a kick sent the ball to Granite and a 15-yard gain and S-yard penalty followed. fol-lowed. A forward pass took the ball to Ogden's 15-yard line, another forward for-ward Dass was blocked and the ball wenl to Ogden on its 20-yard line. Ogden lost the hall on down- an-l took It aga.n by blocking two forward ! passes Granite then blocked a forward for-ward pass, the ball was kicked to the center of the field and returned 26 yards before the runner was downed.
