Show Cedar-Dixie baseball series could be entire season From all indication Coach Hobbs will be depending on Cornell Christensen as his top hurler for the series and for the remainder of the season for that matter. Back of Christensen Hobbs is expected to look to another senior, Kevin Cox, followed by Lee Holmes, a sophomore and a junior Robert Shirts. Coach Jlobbs has been relunctant to use Cox on the mound owing to his strong defensive ability at third base, but in this series Friday, he will pull all stops in an effort to pick up the series. Should the two clubs split, the season will be extended and the Redmen and Flyers will be teeading on "eggs" for the remainder of the short season to see if they can remain undefeated un-defeated and force a playoff for the right to advance to the state playoffs. If either team should win both contests they will be in the drivers seat for the Region crown. ' Aside from the pitching staff Coach Hobbs is expected to have Steve Jenson behind the plate. Bob Piatt will be at first base. The remainder of the infield shifts somewhat, depending on who is on the mound. With Christensen on the mound Coach Hobbs has been going with Ray Meyers on second, Cox on third and Holmes on shortstop. With Cox on the mound Holmes moves to third, Meyers to short and Jeff Adams takes over the chores at second. With Holmes or Shirts on the mound Cox would move in to take over the third base slot. The'outfield starters in the first four games have been Jeff Jensen, Brad Lambeth and Mike McCleary, left to right. Cedar High School baseball season, for all intent and purposes, pur-poses, will begin Friday afternoon af-ternoon at 2 p.m. and will end at about 5 p.m. That's the approximate time that it will take the Redmen and the Dixie Flyers to play a double header to open the Region Eight league baseball season. The games will be held at St. George and win or lose the season will probably be wrapped up in that three and one-half hour period for the two clubs. It is pretty well conceded that the winner of that series will go on to win the Region Eight crown. Last year the Flyers took the series and went on to win the State Baseball championship. The Flyers will be bak with a strong contigent of that championship cham-pionship team including Jameson, w ho was one of the two starting pitchers from last year. The Redmen will go into the battle with the Flyers with a record of three wins and a loss. Coach Dick Hobbs and his Redmen defeated Parowan in a pair to open the season, then split a pair with South Sevier in action this past week in Cedar City. |
