Show Who writes those ads anyway? 15 Y MARYGAE Have you been reading the colorful new advertisements in the papers and magazines&? They are full of suggestions about "How To Brighten Your Home With Light Spring Colors." "Come out of the dark ages," they say. They advise us to redecorate our homes with white carpets and canary-yellow furniture. They suggest we use more pink and pastel lavender and it sounds so refreshing with colors like tangerine, lemon, and lime sherbet. I wonder who writes those things. It has to be someone who has never even met a child under 16 years of age. Can you imagine how long a white carpet would be white with a couple of kids turned loose on it? Kids with shoes and clothes fresh from a streetside ballgame, wrestling around with their pockets full of rocks, papers, and sticky candy. The next thing they would most likely do would be to go to the kitchen for food to take outside--via the living room. Can you picture a quart of strawberry Kool-Aid spilled in the middle of a white rug, or an Oreo cookie dropped and stepped on. Most kids can't even pass through a room without spilling something, especially if you ask them in a panic-stricken voice to please be careful and not spill on your clean floor. Personally, I like a good basic brown everywhere-floors, walls, . and refrigerator doors. Oh, an apricot colored couch would be. nice if you could seal it in plastic and hang it from the ceiling. However, in my opinion, no child could grow up normally in a house with an apricot colored couch. You may disagree. You may think your couch has never been used as a trampoline--but don't be too sure. Have you ever left the kids alone while you went to the store? If you have, your couch has taken at least one good lick. Show me a house with a white carpet and I'll show you a mother with tired hands and knees. Oh, I know my brown, dark blue and green carpets are dirty sometimes, but I can wait a day or two to do something about it. Of course I will keep reading the magazines and papers and admiring those fresh fruit colored carpets and furniture, but buy them? NEVER! I like things the way they are: a few sticky little handprints here and there, toys scattered on the floors, and lots of laughter coming from my basic brown living room. |
