Show ( WASHINGTON A mo SMALL mk4 BUSINESS psffWP Who's on First? I When Is anarchy deplorable, and when is it sanctified? This question apparently re. solves down to whether union clues are being paid. While this may appear to be a simple answer, the recent strike by the independent truck owners confirms this point quite readily. The violence that accompanied accompan-ied the shut down of the independent inde-pendent owner-operators of the freight trucks cannot be condoned, con-doned, no more than there can be approval of the bureaucratic stupidity that created conditions condi-tions to make the nation's independent inde-pendent truckers desperate. But it was interesting to note that Frank Fitzsimmons w-as in the forefront of those who condemned these truck owners, calling for the state governor to crack down on them. He is reported as saying that such militant groups with their "thrusts for total victory at the expense of everyone else," should not be permitted. It so happens that Fitzsimmons Fitzsim-mons is head of the Teamsters I nion, and it would be most interesting to see what his com. ments along this line would be if he had a strike of his dues paying members in progress. There is no doubt if a paralyzing para-lyzing truck strike by the Teamster's Union resulted in non-union drivers taking over the work, that there would be violence, as in the past ft National Federation of Indppi liut would the teamster bosses boss-es approve state governors calling out the National Guard to protect non-union drivers moving the freight during a strike. This is about as likely as many governors doing so. Therefore, Webster, should rewrite it's definition of an anarchist. an-archist. "An anarchist is one who disrupts the economy and order in order to achieve economic econ-omic survival but does not pay dues to a union. But if the same tactics are engaged in by a dues-paying union member, that is not anarchy, but nn exercise ex-ercise in good citizenship." And unfortunately, because many politicians somehow get a piece of these union dues, they would agree with this new definition of anarchy. The chameleon morality of many modern politicians who uphold the rights of union members, but oppress the small operator, is a major reason why there is a lack of confidence confi-dence in government. The independent business people, voting through the National Na-tional Federation of Independent Indepen-dent Business, have long called for unions being placed under antitrust laws, and for the prohibition pro-hibition of nationwide labor bargaining. In view of their actions against independent owner-operators, it will be interesting in-teresting now to see if these same political figures throw support behind these needed reforms. But no one should hold their breath waiting for this to happen, indent Business ( |
