Show Flyers, Redmen place 6fh and 7th first year of State Competition Dixie High School Flyers and ' the Cedar High School Redmen, stepping up to the 3A classification this year, finished sixth and seventh in the 16-team hoop tour na ment staged this past week at the Marriot Center on the Brigham Young University campus in Provo. Both clubs found the sledding tough in the tournament and both, after opening round victories, vic-tories, (Dixie won their first two contests) found the challenge of the American Fork Cavemen too much to handle. The Cavemen with victories over the Redmen in the second round of play and Dixie, in a triple overtime contest in the semi-finals, went on to easily defeat the Davis Darts for the State title. Coach Dick Hobbs and his Redmen posted a convincing 90-85 90-85 victory over Bingham Miners j in the opening round of play, j Bingham after suffering the loss to the Redmen went on to win the consolation championship against Tooele. In the second round of play the t l f i . r t defeated Judge Memorial in a squeeker in the opening round 79-77 79-77 in a come-from-behind effort then downed Logan by a mere two points 55-53 to wind their way into the semi-final championship round. . . In the Friday nights action Don Lay coached Flyers gave the eventual champion Cavemen their toughest challenge in the tournament in a triple overtime game that eventually went to the Cavemen by a score of 81-77. Dixie held substantial leads throughout the contest, but the Cavemen came on to knot the score at the end of regulation play and force the overtime. In the first two overtimes both teams had opportunities to win the contest only to have the opponent come on to tie and force additional action. A pair of free throws for the Cavemen early the third overtime over-time set the stage for the win. In the final night's action the .Flyers were matched against Bear River. The clubs battled on a near even basis through the first three quarters of play but In the fourth period the Grizzlies scored three quick .buckets to lead 61-55 but the Redmen came back with a field goal by Kim Nielson, two buckets by Steve Hair 12 foot jumper by Scott Burns to regain the lead at 63-61. The score was knotted at 63 and 66 and the Redmen on a charity toss by Charles Judd took a brief 66-65 lead. Logan came back with a pair of buckets to regain the lead and with 47 seconds remaining in the game Burns scored on a bucket to pull the Redmen within one point at 72-71. The final 30 seconds was a frenzy of activity. Logan was in control and stalling when Blackner stole the ball and Hair missed a 12 footer from the corner in what looked like sure defeat for the Redmen. The Grizzlies however, were called with a violation turning the ball back to the Redmen and Burns tanked a bucket with 15 seconds remaining to give the Redmen a 73-7L lead. Logan regained possession on the bucket but committed a turnover with 10 seconds left and they fouled Blackner with 9 seconds on the clock and he hit a pair of foul tries to put the Redmen out in front 75-72. It was not over, however, as Kim Nielson committed a foul in back court. David Watterson hit the first of his foul shots and missed the second. Logan grabbed the rebound and took one final shot - one that could have tied the score - and missed and the Redmen had the victory. Uintah 71, Cedar City 58 Against the Utes of Uintah the Redmen controlled the first three quarters of play, but ran out of steam in the final period. The Redmen jumped off to a quick 8-0 lead and controlled the game at 17'all at the end of the first quarter with Brent Foley, Judd, Burns, Nielson and Blackner all in the scoring column. Although the Utes narrowed the gap to two at 21-19, the Redmen again reeled off seven unanswered points to lead "28-19 and were out in front by 10, 34-24 with a jumper at the buzzer by Hair, his 12 points of the game. Midway in the third period the Redmen had a 12 point lead at 40 to 28, but behind the fine board work and shooting of the tournaments tour-naments leading scorer Larry McKinney they had picked up 10 of those points and trailed by only two, 46-44 at the end of the period. Hair hit two quick buckets to open the fourth period and open a six point margin, but, three buckets, including a goal tending violation against Hair gave Utes a tieing bucket at 50-all. It was tied at 52 and 54 before Garth Allred of Uintah hit a 12 footer to give the Utes the lead at 52-50. They went on to seven more points and lead 61-54 before the Redmen could get back on the board with a bucket by Burns. Uintah pushed in four more points to lead 65-56 with 1:27 to play and the Redmen could not pick up the difference. nign iiying vaveiiien ui American Fork blasted the Redmen 98-84 taking an early lead and holding it for the win. For the Redmen they came bouncing back in Friday's action coming-from-behind to defeat Logan and eliminate them from the tournament. In the final nights action the Redmen tangled with Uintah and after leading throughout most of the contest, fell flat in the final period and suffered a 67-58 loss to the Utes. The victory for Uintah gave them fourth place and relegated the Redmen to seventh. The loss by the Flyers left them in sixth place. i Cavemen 89, Cedar 84 Against the Cavemen the . Redmen were never really in the game. Trailing 6-4 early in the first quarter the Cavemen reeled off 14 straight unanswered points to take a 20-4 lead and they had a 27-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Redmen were forced into a pressing defense and found that the three-map zone press was ineffective against the quicker American Fork crew led by talented senior guard David Dean. The Redmen never really got on track during the first half of play and were trailing by 20 at the intermission 55-35. In the third period the Redmen made a dent in the Caveman lead but could never get into contention. con-tention. Brad Blackner hit a pair of fouls to open the fourth period to narrow the margin to 17, and ' Steve Hair and Scott Burns each tanked two from the charity lane to narrow the margin to 15 at 81-66. 81-66. - It was Blackner connecting on a pair of fouls that narrowed the margin to 14 at 86-72, but, again the Cavemen showed too much -poise and speed for the Redmen to make a substantial gain. The pressing defense employed em-ployed by the Redmen was ineffective against the Cavemen after they bombed their way to the early lead. It was a game of offense with little defense on the part of either team. The Cavemen hit over 70 percent from the field, but many of their points came on cripples underneath un-derneath after breaking the Redman press. CedarCity 75, Logan73 Against the Grizzlies of Logan the Redmen fought a gallant battle that necessitated a come-from-behind effort in the final period of play. The score was knotted at 14 all at the end of the first period, It stood at 33-all at the half and was still tied at 55-all at the three quarter mark. JUNIOR HIGH CHEERLEADERS. During this past year the Junior High School Cheerleaders have been busy in support of. numerous athletic functions.
