Show lib - - WINS HONORS. A former Cedar City resident, Florence Baird, has won first place honors in a Bicentennial decoration competition in Henderson, Hen-derson, Nev. Here Mrs. Baird, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morton Thorley of Cedar City, is shown with one of six figures she designed and painted on fire plugs of the community. A competition was held in the community and Mrs. Baird, a fourth grade school teacher, was the first prize winner for her series of six figures celebrating the country's 200th anniversary. They included British and American soldiers, George Washington, Father Francisco Garces, and Martha Washington or Betsy Ross -depending on how you see her. After the contest she created what is perhaps the best-looking of all the figures, shown above,: a red, white and blue Uncle Sam. Mrs. Baird received her. bachelor's degree at Southern Utah State Collegge in Cedar City and obtained, her ' master's from Northern Arizona University at Flagstaff. She is married to Gene Baird of Henderson, Nev. |
