Show T-bird thinclads open 76 season against Montana State; prospects look good With returning experience and promising freshmen and junior college transfers, Southern Utah State's prospects for the 1976 track season look bright. Heading the list of returnees is Leonard Walterscheid. Walterscheid won the RMAC javelin throw last season with a record 196-1 heave. He will also be used in the 440 yard dash. Alan Lewis, the defending RMAC high jump champion, returns along with Gary Nakken, Don Smith, and Chris Anderson. Nakken will participate in the pole vault and 100-yard dash. Smith will throw the discus and shot, while Anderson is scheduled for the 440 yard dash. Smith finished third in the RMAC (shot put) last season. For the first time in many years SUSC has some outstanding out-standing sprinters. Toby Rhue (Santa Ana JOO, Jon Winstead (Fullerton JC), and George Jones (transfer, University of Utah) will give SUSC "the best depth ever in the sprints," according to Coach Steve Lunt. All three will handle the 100 and 220. Hurdle events look to freshmen Greg McDonald (Pater Noster High School, Los Angeles), and Rob Swenson (Boulder City, Nevada). The field events could be the strongest point for the T-Birds with Smith, Lewis, Nakken, and Walterscheid returning added to newcomers like freshman Robert Shirts (2A State Cahamp in javelin and third in long jump last season for Cedar City), Tim Olson (1A Colorado State champ in both long and triple jump), and Brent Barton (1A Utah State champ in the high jump). Paul Niopauli (Eastern Arizona JC, javelin) and Mark MacNaughton (high jump) will give added depth. Lunt feels that the javelin and high jump will be the strongest field events. "Overall, we don't have a lot of depth, but we should have some pretty good individuals," in-dividuals," states Lunt. "Adams State and Western New Mexico look pretty tough in the RMAC right now," adds Lunt. The T-Birds open their season Thursday, March 25, with a dual meet against Montana State in T-Bird T-Bird Stadium.
