Show Committee appointed to evaluate reapportioning of School District m w A three-man committee has been named to formulate recommendations for the Iron County Commission to reapportion reap-portion the Iron County School District, it is announced by Graham MacDonald, Commission Com-mission chairman. Named to form the recommendations recom-mendations were Chairman MacDonald, Iron County Attorney At-torney Hans Q. Chamberlain and Dr. Clair Morris, superintendent of the Iron County School District. The three-man committee has been asked to present a recommendation and an alternate alter-nate recommendation for consideration con-sideration by the School Board and by the Iron County Commission. Com-mission. The Commission is charged, under state statutes to reapportion reap-portion the representative precincts ". . . to achieve as nearly as may be possible, of equal population and in compact form." By law there are five representative school precincts and currently those precincts conform to geographically voting districts within the county. The law, it is pointed out by Clair Hulet, Iron County Clerk, does not specify the percentage that is required to satisfy the ruling, but court rulings, par ticularly on a federal level have indicated that a maximum variation of 18 percent would be permissable. At the meeting of the Iron County School Board held Monday the board expressed a concern that the precincts be brought as nearly into conformity con-formity as possible. The County Commission had previously authorized a census to be taken within the county to determine the present ratio of representation. Under the present precinct Structure there is a precinct representing the voting districts of Parowan and represented on the board by Glen Halterman. The total number of people in that precinct is 1703, or 13.4 percent of the total county population. In Cedar City the district bounded by Main Street on the west and including the entire east side includes 2444 people or 19.3 percent. The board member representing this precinct is Klien Rollo. The southwest portion of Cedar City constitutes another precinct, with Main and center streets at the dividing lines. The precinct, is represented by Dr. Garth Chatterley and includes , 2945 residents and 23.3 percent of the population. The Northwest section of Cedar City, also bounded by Main and Center is the largest precinct with 3838 people, or 30.4 percent. Jay Overson represents the precinct. The fifth district represented all of the remaining portion of the county is served by Oscar Hulet of Summit. Included in the precinct is 1711 people, or 13.6 percent of the total population. To achieve a perfect distribution of the population each district would contain 2520 people. , Efforts will be made to formulate for-mulate recommendations for the reapportionment at an early date so that election procedures could ' be set up in time for the November elections this year.. A change in boundary of any or all of the precincts would necessitate that candidates file and run for election, despite the fact that it might be mid-term for those elected just two years ago. Should the reapportionment result in boundary changes the deadline for filing for each of the precincts would be Wednesday, June 30. Currently two of the five representatives on the school board would come up for election this year; those are the two Cedar City precincts, on the southwest and northwest sections. |
