Show Rep. Jones reports favorable response to efforts of ALIVE in Washington Utah Representative Garth Jones, who returned late Tuesday from Washington D. C. where he joined members Of the American League for Industry and Vital Energy (ALIVE) reports that the Kaiparowits Project looks more favorable now than it did just a few months ago. One of the encouraging reports was from Karl Braithwaite, former Cedar City resident serving on a sub-committee of the Senate dealing with the Clean Air Act. Braithwaite indicated that the sub committee will probably recommend to the Senate that the Number One air. standard be confined to National Parks and Wilderness Areas only and that the I initial 70 mile buffer zone be eliminated, per se. The committee recommendation, Braithwaite indicated, would make the feasibility of the Kaiparowits Project feasible and further indicated that he believed that the project could meet the air standards that will result if the sub committee recommendations are approved. ap-proved. The ALIVE delegation of some 50 people heard the report in meeting with .Utah Senator Frank E. Moss and his staff. Representative Jones expressed hopes that the sub committee report, would in fact, become accepted. It appeas, he indicated, that the final legislation will provide a more realistic approach to the Air Quality standards in conformance to the basic needs of the area. i Jones also reported (that the representation by the ALIVE delegation was the largest to ever travel to Washington, D. C. to lobby for a specific project. . The delegation representated approximately ap-proximately one and one-half percent of the total population of Kane County. To put the delegation in prespectus it was estimated that 30,000 people would have to participate to provide the same representation of the total population. In summary Representative Jones indicated that the reception from all groups was most informative. The visit with Interior Secretary Thomas Kleppe and his staff; with Senator Jake Gam and Moss were most helpful. The delegation also visited and reviewed the Kaiparowits project with officials of the Department of Federal Energy and with Roger Porter, Executive Assistant to Bill Seedmen, Economic Policy Committee in the Franklin Roosevelt Room at the White House.
