' ' - : Tennis Tourney Finals this Saturday The Cedar Spring Tennis Tourney drew a large number of entries and play is fast and lively at the Cedar High courts. Frank Stobbe, tourney director, reported that entrants include in-clude a good sized group from Kanab and some from Parowan and Brian Head. A couple of mild upsets highlighted the first week of play. Ann Sunduvall, a 14 year old from Kanab, upset Stephanie Hartlemaier, 6-4, 6-1, to move into contention for the Women's Singles crown. Curtis Carter, recently returned missionary, knocked off No. 3 seeded by Jay Graff to pose a threat in the Men's Singles event. In another surprise, Walt Prisbrey, 16 of Kanab, bombed Kelley Chatterley 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 in the boys 18 singles, and Brian Leek, a hard hitting lefthander, sneaked by favored Dave Felix 6-4, 6- 4 in the same event. There are some interesting in-teresting matches developing and the public is invited to come out to cheer on their favorites. All matches are held at the Cedar High courts and the prime playing times are from 6:30 a.m. to noon and then from 5 p.m. til dark. In the Men's Singles, its shaping up like a rematch between Bill Kringlen and Frank Stobbe. Kringlen has had a tougher schedule due to the "luck of the craw" and the appearance of some real dark-horses in his half of the draw. Kringlen plays tough, young Curtis Carter in the semis while Stobbe plays Dan Moss, a cagy lefty. In Women's Singles, predictions are now being made that Ann Sunduval who knocked off the No. 1 seed, may meet Lorene Sperry, the No. 2 seed for that title. The other interesting matchup may pit the No. 1 singles player from Cedar, Allen Stewart, against Kanab's No. 1, Walt Prisbrey. The finals are slated for this Friday night and Saturday morning. Trophy presentations and photographs will be taken following the final matches. |
