Show I City council trims budget At the public hearing to discuss the proposed $2.2 million Cedar City budget, ways were presented to eliminate the $477,000 estimated over budget. "It now appears," city council members said, "a balanced budget of approximately $2,2000,000 may be presented at the final hearing and adoption meeting in two weeks, June 16." Some of the major purchases that have tentatively been altered are: $30,000 from the police department for the addition of a new officer and equipment; elimination of $23,000 from the streets department for a new dump truck; water and sewer department for a $30,000 backhoe; eliminating $20,000 from the Crosshollows Recreation Area; no new animal control pickup truck, and the delay of front end money for Leigh Hills special improvement. The past year's budget was $2,106,462, with $430,000 of that going to the construction of the sewer treatment plant. The council again balked at forming a special improvement district Thursday night, but must act in creating or abandoning the district no later than the June 9th meeting. The council also heard a report from the Cedar City Electric Utility Board, but took no formal action on any of their requests. The board asked that the council appoint a new chairman to replace Kent Myers who resigned due to further fur-ther study committments. Other requests were: appoint a person to represent the city at the upcoming California Pacific rate increase hearings; provide a method by which Cedar residents can respond with their feelings regarding the power situation (the board members said this should be done before municipal elections this fall); and reduce the number of Utility Board members and make it a permanent per-manent city board to study all utility questions. Noting that the city council had extended the closing hours for beer parlors during the daylight savings months, a local late night grocery store requested to have their beer selling privileges extended beyond the midnight mid-night curfew. The council denied the request, stating all grocery stores must discontinue selling beer at midnight. The council agreed to complete the abandonment of certain walkway land in the Cedar Crest Subdivision. Bids were opened from gasoline distributors for supplying of gasoline to Cedar City Corporation, the low bid, from a local Texaco distributor, included in-cluded a "pass through" provisions for price increase or decrease. The city commended expiring Library Board and Board of Adjustment Ad-justment members Zoe Palmer, Floyd Atkin, Alice Braithwaite and Beldon Lewis for their years of work with the city. The four positions expire July 1. |
