Show Athletes honored at SUSC Awards Banquet The cream of Southern Utah State College's athletic crop was honored recently at the annual SUSC Athletic Awards Banquet. Presentations were made for both men's and women's athletic events and over a hundred letters were distributed to outstanding athletes in the 11 various categories. Awards for the Outstanding Out-standing Male and Outstanding Out-standing Female athletes were presented Kerry Rupp, Magna, and Cheryl Eyraud, Caliente, NV. Rupp was also named the T-Bird's Most Valuable Basketball Player. Eyraud was awarded Most Valuable Player Awards for women's basketball and baseball. Mike Marini, a senior first baseman from Santa Cruz, CA. was named the Most Outstanding Player for the T-Bird's District Seven Champion baseball team. Baseball letters were awarded 17 team members. In SUSC football, Leonard Walterscheid, T-Bird defensive back, was named the Most Valuable Player. He is a senior from Moab. Kit Janes, an offensive lineman from Kanab, was named the Outstanding Offensive Player. Janes is a sophomore at SUSC. Senior Mike Shaw, a nose guard from Las Vegas, was named the Outstanding Defensive Player for the T-Birds. Coach Tom Kingsford awarded 33 letters to members of the football team. Brent Orchard, T-Bird golf coach, awarded letters to five members of the SUSC gold team. Another letter was awarded G'Ne McEldowney, a sophomore from Fort Douglas, Utah, in women's gymnastics. Coach LaDawn Allen awarded this letter for SUSC's newest sport. In women's basketball, Coach Joy Wood awarded 12 letters to members of the Intermountain Conference co-champions. She awarded another 12 letters to the women's softball team, this year's Intermountain Conference Co-Champs. Basketball coach Stan Jack awarded nine letters to SUSC's first NAIA District Seven champions. Manuel Deason, a 2(X)-400 meter runner, was named the Most Valuable Player in men's track. Deason is a junior from Santa Ana, CA. Track and field coach Steve Lunt also awarded letters to 14 members of the SUSC track team. Leslie Spicer, a junior who qualified for the AIAW Regional Meet in the Two-Mile Two-Mile Run, was awarded a letter for women's track by first-year coach LaDawn Allen. In Women's volleyball, Pauline Nihipali, a sophomore from Laie, Hawaii was named the Most Valuable Player. Coach Joy Wood awarded members of the second place Intermountain In-termountain Conference winners with 12 letters. Robert Sanders, a junior from Garden Grove, CA was named the Most Valuable Player in wrestling. Coach Joe Lopour's squad was awarded fourth place in the RMAC Tournament. He presented eight letters to the team. |
