Braithwaite, president of Southern Utah State College, in behalf of I the Governor, the State of I Utah and SUSC, accepted . the Bicentennial Sculpture i presented in a formal I ceremony on the Cedar City t campus Thursday af- ternoon. in aaaiuon Kum Draper, Director of the Utah Division of Fine Arts was on hand and complimented the efforts of the committees and identified iden-tified that the application for a Sculptor-in-Residence was the first when their availability was announced through the state and national organizations. The' arts and their relationship to life were expressed by President Braithwaite in his formal . acceptance of the work which has been placed near the Science Building adjacent ad-jacent to 300 West Street on the SUSC campus. , f." i . J Presentation ot the sculpture, by Jim DeVore of Sacramento, Calif, was made by Prof. Thomas A. Leek, in behalf of the Cedar City Art Committee and the Cedar City Bicentennial Committee, who assisted in the project. In the brief ceremony Prof. Leek identified the work and detailed the cooperative nature of the project that was created through the Bicentennial National Sculpture Com-pitition Com-pitition and Sculptor-in-Residence Project undertaken un-dertaken by the two troups. "As part of the Cedar City community's Bicentennial events in 1976, a national open sculpture competition was administered by the Cedar City Art Committee. Sixty-two marquette entries were-"Submitted by artists from across the United States. "A qualified juror selected the sculpture marquette by Jim DeVore for a monumental outdoor sculpture commission." Prof. Leek explained that Mr. DeVore has spent considerable time fabricating the large metal sculpture in a studio provided by SUSC and that during his residency in Cedar City has presented lectures and demonstrations on sculptural processes. Brief remarks were made at the ceremony by the artist and by Dr. Eugene T. Woolf, chairman of the SUSC Bicentennial Committee, who participated in the project. I I am Nicole Elizabeth Stucki and I was one year old on the fourth of June (this I was also my grandfather's J birthday.) Las Vegas is where I live I with my parents, Rosa Lee Hardy Stucki and Bruce W. Stucki and my brother, Scott. Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Stucki of Cedar City and Mr. and Mrs. Gus Hardy of St. George are my grandparents. grand-parents. Also I have three great grandparents who are Mr. and Mrs. Noel Williams of Kanarraville and Mrs. Cora Stucki of Cedar City. |
