Show Dec. 23 - or the Mad Rush to Christmas I shouldn't gripe about details poor old Santa Claus leaves out, he has a harder job now than he used to. Kids used to be satisfied with dolls and wristwatches. Now, I know at least one teen-age boy in Parowan who is expecting old Santa to load up his sleigh with a brand new 4-wheel drive pickup. Now I figure if this kid gets a pickup for Christinas this year, the only way his folks can top it next year when he's a senior will be with a Mercedes Benz for graduation. The size of Santa's sleigh must be bigger than ever and the size of everyone's pocketbooks must be , shrinking rapidly. I love Christmas on Chrstmas Eve and Christmas Day. I have to keep telling myself that as I go deeper and deeper in debt, "oh well, it qnly comes once a year." MerryChristmas everyone and best wishes for a super new year with a raise in pay and a cut in taxes. By Mary Gae Evans I"', PAROWAN - What are you doing sitting there reading the paper? Don't you realize there are only two days until Christmas. Christ-mas. Get up and join the rest of us who are going crazy worrying about last-minute details and presents for people we just remembered at the last minute. And, if you were in the stores in Cedar last Saturday, you know there are large masses of humanity who still have money left to spend. Children were busy dismantling the toy departments while their parents stumbled around with vacant looks and arms full of hamburger cookers. You had better stock up on hamburger because it is a cinch you'll get one of those this year. Last year it was crock pots, this year it's hamburger cookers and crepe makers. Anyway, for a man who has earned so much fame and renown, Santa Claus sure leaves a lot up to the parents these days. And most of the toys he brings are like cars-they don't come with any extras. In fact, you might be wise to read on a few of the boxes you have hidden away in the attic or basement-chances are that race set you paid $39.95 for will say "complete set, batteries, lights and adapter not included," also "assembly required." And the doll who curls up, cuddles and coos won't move a muscle without four size D batteries installed in her tummy. You, probably think you have enough wrapping paper, but each of thos giant rolls you bought has only three feet of paper on it and the kids have probably used up or lost your scotch tape. The price, of cream cheese and all other items needed to make Christmas goodies have been marked up in honor of the holidays so if -you didn't shop early for that you will pay more. And, if you haven't got your tree up yet, I might warn you that although the stores have dozens of kinds of Christmas bulbs, they won't have the kind you need for your tree so be prepared to buy a new string or two. |
