Show Navajo Lake Journey Made by Fish Project Workers An effort to open the Navajo Lake ice pack last week nd proved highly successful and it is expected it will do much to prev?nt any winter kill of fish in the popular lake, Dell Carpenter, president of the Cedar Wildlife Federation, reports. Mr. Carpenter, Mel Hunter and! Bob Nelson, federation members and Douglas Day, State Fish and Game department representative, made a trip to the lake Friday to put a pump into operation asj a means of pumping air under the Ice pack and protect the fish from winter kill. i The 1 fie had been paced in the water last fall, and Carpenter Carpen-ter reports that after the pump had been in operation for a few hours holes started to appear in the Ice, and by Saturday morn-1 Ing about 600 feet of open water wa-ter crossed the lake. Holes be-( gan to appear and rapidly spread across the lake, Carpenter Carpen-ter said. Although a heavy snow storm forced the men to leave. the lake they left the pump running and felt that a considerably larger area would be opened before the fuel supply became exhaused. He also reported that fish in the lake were alive and seemed very active. The group will return to the lake this week end to survey the results of last week's efforts, and to again operate the pump to keep the lake open. |
