Show 4-H Clubs Prove Worth to Nation Hundreds of 4-H boys and girls In the state are learning the better way to handle farm animals and farm machines. They learn the economic factors and safe tested methods in caring car-ing for cattle, hogs, sheep and the. family tractor, according to the State Extension Service which directs the activities. The 4-H meat animal program, now In Its 28th year, gives rural ru-ral youth first hand knowledge of breeding, feeding and marketing. market-ing. Members learn demonstra. tlon techniques, how to show animals, an-imals, and many become expert Judges. They show their animals at county and state fairs, often contributing much of their time and skill to other fair events. The 4-H tractor program has helped a half million 4-H Club members throughout the country, coun-try, and about 40,000 local leaders lead-ers and extension workers have been trained. This marks the I 12th year for the program which is set up to teach efficient use f tractors and other farm machinery ma-chinery as well. Operation and proper care are also taught. The 4-Ifers are rewarded for superior achievement. In the meat animal program, Thomas F. Wilson, Chicago, a staunch .up-porter .up-porter of 4-H youth, provides awards which Include eight sectional sec-tional winner trips to the a-tlonal a-tlonal 4-H Club Congress. Na-iSonal Na-iSonal champions receive $400 college scholarships. Six will be chosen for 1957. The state winner win-ner is presented with a hand--.some 19-Jewel wrist watch. Twelve national champions wHl be chosen in the 4-H tractor trac-tor program, and will receive $400 scholarships. State winner will get an all expense trip to the national Club Congress. Utah Oil" Refining Company provides the awards for winners from this state. The oil company also cooperates co-operates with the Extension Service Ser-vice In leader training clinics, special tractor events, and furnishes fur-nishes educational material.
