Show Rams Suffer Defeat in Opening Games, Juniors and Sophomores Show Promise i The Parowan High School bas-i bas-i ketball team opened its 12 i practice season last week end and went down to a double defeat de-feat at the hands of two strong teams of the area, tthe Bobcats of Panguitch High and the Tiger Tig-er of Hurricane High School. On Friday night, In a game played in the Parowan gym, Coach Lowell Caldwell's team fell before a bigger and more experienced team from Panguitch by a 41 to 31 school. Saturday night the Rams traveled to Hurricane Hur-ricane and although they shot better in the game, getting 52 points, they couldn't stop the Tiger's scoring attack that amassed amas-sed 78 points. Saturday night's point output was Just double the Ram's Friday night effort. The bright spot of both encounters en-counters was the fact that the Juniors and sophomores on the squad accounted for slightly more than half of the points scored by the Rams In both games, and Coach Caldwell may be able to tell which ones of his younger group will break into the starting start-ing lineup. In the Ram Bobcat contest, the 12-4 lead taken by the visitors in the first period was carried throughout the gams and added to slightly. The Rams came up to within five points of the visitors visit-ors at halftime, 18 to 13 and early ear-ly in the third quarter came up to 21-17, but then dropped back again. Each team Scored ten points in the final period. ' In the Hurricane game the Rams again dropped behind In the first period by 11 points and were never able to get back Into the game against their taller opponents, op-ponents, gradually dropping farther far-ther out of the running. They gained in the second period with the halftime score of 28 to 21 being about as close, as they came. ,, , The Rams got 41 points In the last half for a 62 total but didn't did-n't stop the Tiger onslaught which rolled up 50 points in the same 16 minutes. 'Three men got into the double figures from each team, with Robin Graff, 21; Gary Simkir.s, 12. and Mike Hyatt, 10 for th Rams. But Hastings Hast-ings with for the Tigers led all scorers and Barriik with 16 and Gibson with 13 for Hurricane, Hurri-cane, tipping the scales their way. The Parowan Junior varsity squad broke even in the two nights, dropping at 32 to 24 decision de-cision to the Bobcat JVs and winning from the Hurricane JVs by a 44 to 39 score. ' Only one game is on tap for the Rams this week Coach Caldwell Cald-well states, with the postponing of the Ram-Redmen contest. The one game will be on Saturday night in the Parowan gym with the strong Hurricane team coming com-ing for a return game. Next week the Iron County Tournament vill be played on Friday and Saturday Satur-day with the Parowan Rams and Cedar Redmen meeting two of the strongest teams in the southern south-ern Nevada area.
