He questioned sharply, with innuendo, "I understand that you called on the defendant Is that true?" "Yes," answered the witness. "And what did he say?" the lawyer asked. The counsel for the other side objected strenuously that evidence evi-dence as to conversation was nol admlssable. After u long argument argu-ment the court recessed to consider con-sider the point, returning hours later to announce that the question ques-tion was proper. "Now." smirked victorious Inquisitor. In-quisitor. "What did he say?" "He wasn't home, sir."
