Show Cedar Redmen Open Basketball Season with Thriller The Cedar High Redmen opened open-ed the 1962 63 basketball season Friday evening at the CSU field house with a thrilling overtime game against the Eagles of Mil lard. Millard won out in the high scoring contest 65 to 63. after a 59-all deadlock at the end of regulation time. It was a case of the foul line beating the Redmen. They out-hit out-hit the visiting Eagles 27 to 23 in the field goal department, but defensively the Redmen were a little aggressive and gave up 35 foul shots to the Eagles, who made 19 of them. In addition to this fact, four of the Redmen left the game via the foul route in the regular play and a fourth, had to be benched In the overtime over-time period. The Redmen still had an opportunity op-portunity at the foul line, but couldn't come through as they hit only nine of 28 attempts. The Redmen committed 24 personal fouls, and the Eagles were charged charg-ed with 20. Both teams opened up with a full court press and Han's Chamberlain Cham-berlain and Danny Jones, the two Redmen backcourt men showed good poise in handlirg the ball. They were able to bring the ball. past the Eagle press and defensively caused a number of Eagle errors to put the Redmen out in front early in the game. Jones stole ,the ball from the Eagles Ea-gles on the first press and scored to open the game and the Red-men Red-men moved out to a 19 to 9 lead in the first quarter. Neil Roberts led the way In the Scoring department, but drew some assists from Lee Hunter in the first quarter to aid the cause. In the second quarter the more experienced Eagles fought back and with some fine shooting by Bruce Beckstrand, a 6-5 Junior, they closed the gap and tied It at intermission at 32-all. The second half was played on even terns with the Redmen holding a 43 to 46 lead at the end of the third period only to be forced into the overtime. In the fourth quarter three Redmen went out on fouls, Including In-cluding Wes Roberts, Nell Roberts Rob-erts and Lee Hunter, In that order. or-der. In the overtime It wn Dm-ny Dm-ny Jones who was forced to the bench. At the conclusion of the game onlv Hans Chamberlain remained with any experience and Coach Bruce Decker finished with Collin Col-lin Watson, a sophomore, whom he had called on for startinfi duties: John Black and Dick I .am-erth, .am-erth, both sophomores; Don Reld, a Junior, and Chambsrlaln.
