Show Turkey Population Increasing in Southern Mountains Turkey populations from original orig-inal plants in the Boulder Mountains Moun-tains and in the Pine Valley Mountains have extended themselves them-selves to Cedar Mountain and the Yankee Reservoir area, it was reported this week by the Utah Department of Fish and Game in a regional newslettet .from the Cedar City office. Reed Henderson, regional game manager, indicated in the newsletter news-letter that much optimism has been expressed that In the near future Utah may have a liunt-ablo liunt-ablo population of turkeys. Henderson Indicated that the fish and game department has worked closely with the Forest Service in establishing turkey populations on the national forests. for-ests. Some of the more established estab-lished areas include the Boulder Mountains in Kane County, not- withstanding that the first plants were made In eastern Utah on the LaSalle Mounptains. It Is believed that the extension exten-sion of the birds into the Cedar Mountain and Yankee Reservoir areas has been made from the Kane County plant and from a more recent plant in Pine Valley. Most hroodR vary In size from 8 to 12 birds, Henderson stated. All Indications show that the hen finally ends up, after their mortality rate with about eight birds per year. This Indicates that these birds are rather prolific proli-fic which is unusual for birds of this size. Henderson also stated that all sportsmen should keep their eyes open for these birds and report any sign of broods which they may see. "Such ocular observations observa-tions are of real value to us In our management program,'' he said. In the same light all sports men are asked to help protect these birds along with all other species of wildlife so we may be afforded some guarantee ol populations for the future.
