Show Zion Park Tunnel Road Closed to Heavy Truck Travel The Zion-Moti!it Carmel road Is closed to commercial trucking effective ef-fective June 15 through September Septem-ber 30. Superintendent Frank R. Oberhansley advises that the road was closed to commercial trucks for the first time In September Sep-tember of last year In accordance with appropriate regulations published pub-lished in the Federal Register. August 28, 1959. The above regulations permit the passage through Zion National Na-tional Park of light vehicles owned by local ranchers, pickup, pick-up, station and panel wagons, those vehicles carrying park visitors, vis-itors, or delivering or receiving supplies In the Park or for use by contractors authorized to operate oper-ate therein. Vehicles owned by the Federal, State or County government gov-ernment will be premitted over park roads when used in connection con-nection with official operations. Copies of the rules are available avail-able to truckers at the Zion Visitor Vis-itor Center and notices will be mailed to all known interested persons and firms. I Decision to close the Zion-Mount-Carmel road to commercial commer-cial trucking during the season of heavy tourist traffic was made following a f'vp-year sudy. Earlier, Ear-lier, the National Park Service constructed and conveyed to the State of Utah a modern highway lover Cedar Mountain, designated as State Route 14. In part, the road was built to provide an east-west east-west bypass for commercial vehicles ve-hicles and remove the hazard of large trucks from Zion Roads. It Is the opinion of the Service that this route can adequately serve the needs of truckers through the summer season. In winter, when visitor travel Is low and on the occasions State Highway No. 14 is closed, trucks are permitted through the Park. |
