Show Nat'l Li ttlo League Play Favors I Lions and Columbia 1 TEAM STANDINGS Lions 2 1 .667 , Columbia 2 1 .667 ; Safeway 11 .500 Elks 1 3 .250 Race for the leadershlp"in the National Little League baseball was thrown Into a tie Tuesday ' evening when the Elks, winless In three outings, downed Columbia Colum-bia Iron Mines, who had won their first two games. The loss by Columbia threw them into a tie for first place with the Lions Club, whom Columbia Co-lumbia had beaten on the week end. Safeway moved into the win column last Wednesday evening with a 11 to 6 win over the Elks Rulers with Robert Barrick hand-ling hand-ling the mound chores. The loss was charged to Donnie Hunter who was on the mound for the first three innings. Two home runs helped spark the win fori Safeway. They were belted by Barrick and by Scott Nelson. Ronnie Ron-nie Chamberlain also helped the winning cause with a pair of doubles. Only extra base hits for the losers was a double by Steve Nelson. Thursday evening Columbia came from behind in the final Inning to win over Lions in the closest contest of the week. Winning Win-ning pitcher was Bruce Holmes j and the loss was charged to Curtis Cur-tis Anderson, although Anderson I allowed fewer hits, 6 to 10. Co-ilumbla Co-ilumbla took an early lead of 6 to 3 in the first two frames but Lions bounced back with five tallies in the fourth only to have Columbia score three in the bottom bot-tom half of that frame. Lions went out in front by one, 10 to 9 in the fifth but the bottom of the sixth showed two runs for Columbia and an 11 to 10 win. Home runs were hit by David Jensen and Anderson for Lions and by Richard Gillies for Columbia. Co-lumbia. Friday evening Lions bounced back with a 17 to 12 win over Elks in a game of walks. Each team had only three hits Includ-lug Includ-lug another home run by Jensen Jen-sen of Lions. There was a total of 30 walks In all. In the third frame Lions scorec. nine runs without the advantage of a single sin-gle hit. Daniel Webster homered for the losers. Tuesday evening Elks bounced out in front in the first inning of play against Columbia and held onto that lead for a 12 to 5 win. Brent Averett was the winning win-ning pitcher and the loss was charged to Bruce Holmes. Columbia Colum-bia had a turn at the bad breaks with a series of walks being costly throughout the game. |
