Show National Guard Gives 1-D Classification All Guardsmen satisfactorily performing their military duties in the Utah National Guard will soon be given a 1-D Selective Service Ser-vice Classification under a new Selective Service policy, Major General Maxwell E. Rich, state adjutant general, announced today. This will affect many young men who Joined the Guard after attaining 18 years of age. Indl-viduals Indl-viduals who have been reclassl-fled reclassl-fled from I D to 1-A owing to failure to satisfactorily perform their military duties will not benefit by. this new policy General Gen-eral Rich said. Guardsmen will be reclassified 1-D and will maintain the new classification only if they fullflll armory drills and field training attendance requirements and perform per-form active duty with the Army agreed upon when enlisted. Under present enlistment requirements, re-quirements, young men between 17 and 18tt who Join the Guard must serve either 11 weeks or six months on active duty. If 11 weeks active duty is elected the individual's service obligation continues until 28 years of age. By volunteering for six months active duty his service obligation obliga-tion is reduced to eight years, 3tt years in the ready reserve during which time he must attend at-tend 90 of the 48 armory drills annually, and all of of the 15 days annual summer field training, train-ing, plus four years in the standby stand-by reserve in an inactive status. Those between 18 Vi and 26 must serve six months on active duty plus years in the ready reserve with the same armory drills and field training attendance attend-ance requirements. Men over 26 who have not previously incurred incur-red a service obligation are not involuntarily liable for addition-al addition-al active duty or reserve service, General Rich said. Guardsmen have been cautioned cau-tioned to maintain their attendance attend-ance requirements because a 1-D Selective Service classification lost owing to failure to satisfactorily satisfac-torily maintain attendance requirements re-quirements cannot be restored under any circumstances, According Accord-ing to General Rich. Most Utah National Guard units now are at full strength; therefore, young men desiring to enlist must be placed on a waiting list until a vacancy occurs. oc-curs.
