Show Ash Creek Dam Construction Gets Final Nod Announcement was made Wednesday Wed-nesday morning by Jay Bingham, I chairman of the Utah Power and Water Board, that approval had been given for construction of the proposed Ash Creek Dam in, Washington County by the Army Engineers as a flood control project. pro-ject. This decision is of tremendous importance to southern Utah, since it clears the way for a combination com-bination water storage, flood control con-trol and highway development project. The project has been under un-der consideration for a number of years, and although it is one of the most Important projects of the area, the multiple use aspect of the storage dam has resulted in repeated delays of both water wa-ter conservation and highway development. The proposed dam fits into the Black Ridge highway program pro-gram in as much as the dam will serve as a road bed across Ash Creek Canyon instead of a highway bridge. The Black Ridge section has long been e serious bottleneck and traffic hazard on U. S. Highway 91. The State Road Commission has delayed repeatedly repeat-edly the highway development because the water development problems had not been ironed out. With the Army engineers as-suming as-suming responsibility for the dam, it is assumed that the road commission will proceed immediately immed-iately with plans for construction construc-tion of this highly important section sec-tion of the new highway. Mr. Bingham stated Wednesday Wednes-day that engineers will arrive 01 th site on Aug. 8, and that it is hoped that construction work on the dam can be under way by Oct. 1. There is no reason for further delay on the highway project and indications are thit bids should be. let soon on this part of the project as well. |
