Either you have climbed the hill under your own power or perhaps your instructor is now allowing you to use the tow facilities because of your excellent ex-cellent progress. Whatever the case may be be, a new method of descending a slope should be injected in-jected now. This new method is called traversing. It is very easy to master, and should be employed often as a safe means of descending de-scending very steep slopes. Even the experts traverse, so it Is to-be to-be learned properly because you will use it often. Instead of directing your skis straight down the slope as you did in the straight running position, po-sition, you head your skis across the slope, and descend diagonally. diagon-ally. The body position Is essentially essen-tially the same as was explainer) for the straight running position posi-tion last week. Two slight modifications modi-fications are necessary for the traverse. 1. In every case your uphill ski should be advanced four ta six Inches ahead of your downhill down-hill ski. 2. Roll your ankles into the-hill. the-hill. This will cause the uphill edges of your skis to dig in, and will prevent your sliding sideways. side-ways. V completion of the traverse ' Stop Turn. This turn is ex-jecuted ex-jecuted simply by rotating the (shoulder (the shoulder on the downhill side of your body) forward for-ward and In toward the hill and at the same time exaggerate the "dig in" of your uphill elges by bending and dipping your knees sharply in toward the hill. When you have stopped, do a kick ;v.rn and traverse the slope in the opposite direction. If this procedure Is followed you can now negotiate any hill you might encounter. Next Week "Stemming" |
