Show I Rams, Redmen, Win-Lose In Iron County Tournament Iron Coups Tournament co-sponsored by Parowarr High School and Cedar High School couid be termed a 50 per cent success for the Rams and Redmen, with each squad winning one and losing one. The two Iron County schools hosted Gunnison High! and South Sevier of Monroe Friday evening at the College of Southern Utah fieldhouse in Cedar City and Saturday; evening at the Parowan High gymnasium. South Sevier came out the bet-ter bet-ter of the four squads, posting victories over Parowan Friday t evening and Cedar City Saturday, night. South Sevier took the Rams 41 to 41 and downed the Redmen by a score of C5 to 53. Gunnison became the goat of the two-night stand, tak'.i ; ! on the chin in Cedar Ci y. lysine; to Coach Bruce Decker's Koi'tnen 58 to 43 and Saturday at Parowan Par-owan gave local fans the satisfaction satis-faction of a win, losing to John Wood's aggregation by a score of 50 to 41. Two rather unusual factors of the tournament was the fact that In both winning against Gunnison Gunni-son and losing to South Sevier the Redmen turned In Identical scores of 58 points. The Rams on the other hand made It uniform defensively In their win and loss. ' Both opponents scored 41 points with the difference In the offensive offen-sive showing of the Rams with 41 against South Sevier and 50 against Gunnison. Cedar vs. Gunnison Frldav evening the Redmen fell behind in the opening quarter quar-ter of the Gunniscn game as they found the visitors setting up a tieht zone defense that kept the Redmen well outside. Coach Pecker's Redmen moved the ball well, but became anxious in their shooting, attempting shots, parti-cularly parti-cularly off the fast break, when Is was inadvisable. They bounced hack in the second sec-ond quarter, however, with some fine ball handling and a good fast break to tank 20 points and take a halftlme lead of 30 to 2X The Redmen moved the ball Into Weston Kitchen under the bucket buc-ket and he pounded In 10 points In the period to move the Red-men Red-men out In front. Two stolen balls, converted Into baskets by Eric Gardner, and two exception--allv fast breaks accounted for other scoring In the quarter. The Redman maintained their lead In the third period and Coach Decker Deck-er sent in a completely new five for the final eight minutes of play to move to an easy 58 to 43 victory. South Sevier Saturday evening the offensive punch of the Redmen remained constant with another 58 point performance. It was not good enough, however, to match Carl Tuft's crew's 65 point baTrage. Cedar defensive alignment was set up tight under the bucket In the first quarter of play to stop the close-in shots the theorv backfired as the South Sevier crew pounded from outside, led by Melbotire Yergensen, to take a 17 to 13 first quarter lead. The margin In the game fluc-uated fluc-uated throughout the remainder of the game with the Redmen closing the gap on occasions only to have South Sevier move out in front again. Kitchen agal Jed the scoring for the Redmen with 19 points. lie was topped in the game by Grav of South Sevier, Sev-ier, who totaled 20 for the game. Gardner came through with 17 points and Steve Yergensen potir-ed potir-ed through 12 to keep the Red-men Red-men In the contest. Foul shooting shoot-ing predominated In the gme with a total of 57 attempts bein taken. Both teams hit a high percent with the Redmen connecting con-necting with 22 out o' 29 attempts at-tempts and S ith Sevier hitting 81.4 per cent with 23 made In 23 attempts. S. South Sevier Coach Wood continued his platoon pla-toon system Friday evening In the Tarowan game against South' Sevier. However, he brake up the senior and Junior combinations combina-tions somewhat. Using five men one quarter, another five in the second quarter, reverting to the original five for the third period and going with the other five for for the final eight minutes. This could possibly have accounted ac-counted for the Rams' loss in this game. Parowan controlled the game during the first three quarters of play but always by a slim margin. Wood set his Rams in a tight zone defense and help South Sevier out of the "key" most of the game. The Rams moved to a 9 to 8 lead at the end of the first quarter, but had some trouble in handling the ball close In. In the second period the second aggregation of Rams took over and moved out to a five no'"1 lead midway in the period. Some long shooting by South Sevier rehired re-hired the margin near the half-time half-time to only two points and the intermission came with the Rams still in possession of a slim lead, 22 to 20. The third period was fought on even terms with South Sevier breaking the two point lead before be-fore the end of the period to tie the game at the three-quarter mark nt 33-all. In the opening minutes of the fourth period the visitors took advantage of every break and left the Rams far behind, leading as much as nine points at one time. The Rams settled down in the final minutes of play and hacked away at the lead, but time ran out with South Sevier hanging onto a three point lead, 41 to 41. S. In this period the Rams managed to get one field goal and converted six foul tries for their eight points. Although way oiu in .sinKi'iing from i!u- field and missing several setups, the Rams hit consistently from the foul line. The second platoon took over as the second period opened and cut the Gunnison lead by two points with the period ending 2G to 20 for the visitors. Following the halftlme rest, during which Coach Wood must have said something to his players, play-ers, platoon No. one came back in and the fireworks started. In this eight minutes, the Rams hit for 19 points while holding the Bulldogs to 6 and took over the lead by a 39 to 32 score. And 10 of the Rams' 19 points were cor. tributed by Dennis Lowder in about four minutes time with five straight field goals In five tries from the corner of the court. I In the final quarter the No 2 1 platoon took over again and managed to hold the lead to the end of the game, although the Bulldogs did creep up one point. Foul pitclng played a big part in the Parowan win, with the Rams converting 22 shots Into 1S( points during the game, and dur. lng one stretch hit 14 straight shots from the foul line. Gunnl-1 son hit 10 out of 18 tries but outscored Parowan from the field by one field goal. This Is the fourth game In which Wood has used the pla-l toon system with 10 men playing in two groups and each group remaining Intact so that no man has played more than another so far this season. Twe members of the squad of 12 has been out for the past two weeks.
