Show Delia D.Marsden Named Mother Candidate v-.- J .' Y - ..--... MRS. DELLA D. MARSDEN Mrs. Delia Davenport Marsden has been nominated by the Parowan Par-owan Literary Club as its candidate candi-date for the Mother of the Year, according to Mrs. Jean Hendrickson, Hendrick-son, president. Mrs. Marsden willi compete with other candidates from the southern Utah area for the right to represent the district in the state contest. From the state winners will be selected the National Mother of the Year to represent all Motherhood. The candidate is the wife of William Marsden of Parowan and has lived in Iron County all of her life. She is a native of Para-gonah, Para-gonah, being a daughter of James Burrows Davenport ami Matilda Jane Barton Davenport, pioneers to this area. She was a school teacher for several years, havng begun her career in a one-room school in Buckhorn at $10 per month. She has always been an accomplished ac-complished musician both in singing groups and at the piano. pia-no. A year ago she concluded over 25 years of continuous teaching of piano to scores of youngsters, including her own seven sons and daughters. Her motto has always been, "Every child should have a chance for a musical education." Mrs. Marsden has been active and held positions of importance in the LDS Church organizations organiza-tions both in the ward and stake. She was president of both the M I A and the Relief Society Socie-ty and was organist for her ward Relief Society for 40 years. She has also participated extensively extensive-ly in the Daughters of Utah Pio neers, Civil Defense, Parent-Tea-thers Associations, Band Mothers, Moth-ers, and is a member of the Parowan Par-owan Literary Club. She and her husband were married in the Salt Lake Temple Tem-ple June 7, 1916. They are the parents of three sons and four daughters, all of whom are married mar-ried and have gained prominence in their endeavors. Their oldest daughter, Mrs. Milton (Irene) Hyatt, resides in Cedar City where she has continued her mother's mo-ther's early training as a pianist as weii as a fine hoiiiemakf r. Their other daughters are Mrs. Hyrum (Florence) Holt of Orem, Mrs. Harry (Louise) Bluehm, who are now in Pennsylvania where Mr. Bluehm is attending Penn State College. Mrs. Reed (Mary Jane) Stewart Stew-art lives in Salt Lake City where her husband is getting his doctorate doctor-ate in chemical engineering. Th two younger girls are both col-ilege col-ilege graduates with degrees in music. I A son, Carlyle, is a music in-! in-! structor at the high school in Pomona, Calif, while Ralph as an instructor in music at Weber College Col-lege in Ogden. Kent followed In his father's footsteps and Is the i farmer of the family, engaging in this pursuit at Mesa, Ariz. There are 22 grandchildren in th family. All three of her sons All three of the sons served in World War II and all of them have fulfilled missions for their church. Mrs. Marsden has now given up many of her outside activities to he with her husband, whose health has been rather poor for some time. It was the unanimous opinion of the Literary Club that their candidate was an Ideal representative repre-sentative of all mothers in the area. She meets all six qualifications quali-fications for the American Mother Moth-er of the year which are: 1. That she be a successful mother, as evidenced by the character and achievements of her Individual children. 2. That she be an active member mem-ber of a religious body. 3. That she embody those traits highly regarded In mothers: moth-ers: courage, cheerfulness, affection, affec-tion, kindness, understanding, and a homemaking ability. 4. That she exemplify in her life and conduct the precepts of the Golden Rule 5. That she have a sense of re-lois'hility re-lois'hility In civic affairs and that she be active in service for public benefit. . 6. That she be qualified to represent rep-resent the Mothers of America in all responsibilities attached tc her role as the National Mother, |
