Show High School Hoop Squad Drops Dixie' Cedar City High School casaba team traveled to St. George Friday Fri-day evening and threw the Dixie Division race into a three-way tie by posting a 39 to 3G win over the Flyers. It was the first loss of the league season for the Flyers and dropped them from first place into a three-way tie with the Cedar Ce-dar Redmen and the Wolves of Enterprise at the end of the first half of play. The game was played on an even basis through mast of the contest until late In the third quarter of play when the Red-men Red-men moved away from a 27 to 27 deadlock to lead at the end of the quarter by a five-point margin mar-gin 33 to 28. Two foul pitches to start the fourth period by Paul Stokes made to 35 to 29, the largest spead enjoyed by either team in the game. Key to the Redmen win was the fine shooting and driving from the top post by Paul Stokes. He was high man on the floor for the evening with 18 counters. His shooting percentage from the field was 50T. hitting six in 12 atempts. He added six for eight from the foul line. Also instrumental in the victory vic-tory was !ie rebounding of Stan Anderson who picked off 15 defensive de-fensive rebounds to lead both teams in that department. The Dixie Flyers topped the Redmen in offensive rebounds with 19 compared to only five for the Redmen. On the defensive boards the Redmen led 29 to 15 with Richard Blake of Dixie high for his team with eight defensive defen-sive and five offensive rebounds. Teamwise the Redmen hit 3Sr of their field goal attempts while the Flyers had to settle for only 20r'r. Evan Wilson of Dixie and Steve Cahoon matched field goals to open the scoring and Stokes hit and was fouled for a two and one situation to move the Red-men Red-men out in front 5 to 4. In the first quarter of play the two Dixie Division teams traded baskets with the lead changing hands on four different occasions with Kent Smith of the Redmen hitting from the field in the final fi-nal 10 seconds to break a 12 to 12 tie. In the second quarter of play the game was also even being tied at 15, 17. 19 and 21. That was followed by a field goal and foul shot by Anderson; then Stokes hit from the field to move to 33 at the end of the period. During that move Douglas Miles hit one of two free throw attempts at-tempts for the Flyers' only score. In the final quarter' of play the Redmen went into a semi -freeze attempting to control the ball through most of the period. During Dur-ing the final eight minutes Stokes was the only Redman to score, hitting twice from the field and twice from the free throw lane. Early in the first quarter of play Steve Cahoon, leading scorer scor-er for the Redmen, was sidelined with an ankle Injury and Neal Roberts, the Redmen leading re-bounder, re-bounder, was unable to see action ac-tion in the game owing to an ankle Injury. Kent Smith came off the bench to fill In for Cahoon and turned in a fine game along with regulars regu-lars Blaine Cutler and Spencer Jones. Donnle Roberts also saw action filling In for Jones during the second half of play after Jones had picked up his third personal foul of the evening. |
