Show Deer Hunt Success Below Average As Storms Cover Area A predicted sunny and clear day for the opening of the general gen-eral deer hunt in Utah Saturday turned into a rather rainy affair af-fair during the afternoon and remained re-mained that way throughout the opening week end. Sunday was particularly bad with rain and snow falling intermittently during dur-ing the day. The inclement weather had a rather bad effect on hunter success, suc-cess, too. A usually strong open-I open-I lng week end turned into a med-1 I locre event for most hunters withi a number returning to their 1 homes and work Monday with little or no success. A total of .70 of an inch of water fell In the Cedar City area from the period from Friday th ough Tuesday evening and the nearly one inch of precipitation precipita-tion dampened the spirits of many a hunter. ne familiar deer stories were still being heard around town, however. Some rather phenomenal phenomen-al successes were reported by some and on the other hand com-plete com-plete "skunks" were reported by other parties. Monday found a number of hunters back in town to warm up before heading for the hills and another attempt to make their kill. Many mountain roads have - become almost impassable as the result of the storms and a number num-ber of parties have been trapped temporarily in their camps. No loss of life In the southern Utah area has been reported but the State Highway Patrol office reports re-ports a number of minor accidents acci-dents involving property dam-ace dam-ace and a number of automobiles automo-biles and trui-ks that were unpre-r, unpre-r, tno adverse weather conditions had to call for assistance assist-ance to get out of the mountain area. State Road Commission report ed approximate'y 12 to 14 Inches of snow at Midway on Highway 14 across Cedar Mountain. The road has been opened, however. ' by the department. The road remains re-mains slushy from the Wood's Ranch area to th- top of Midway Mid-way where ih' ,,d is now packed pack-ed with snow in the area near the Cedar Creaks takeoff. The road will be kept oen, the department de-partment reported, throughout the hunting season, and longer until such time that conditions on Highway 91 necessitate the uc of the road commission's equipment to keep that main ar. tery open. |
