Show Special Meeting Conducted By Youth Council A very interesting meeting of public concern was held Tuesday Tues-day evening, Oct 22, sponsored by the Juvenile Protection committee com-mittee of the Cedar City Coordinating Coordin-ating Council. Chairman J. Frank Dalley presided. pre-sided. He stated that the committee com-mittee would like to change the name from juvenile protection to youth council and outlined the objectives of the committee for future discussion. He also stated stat-ed that the committee plans to devote Its efforts to: 1, youth recreation; 2, youth employment, especially student employment, and 3, vocational guidance. The discussion for this particular meeting was to be youth recreation, recrea-tion, especially as it applies to the need for a youth center. Special Guests Besides the regular members of the committee, others from the community who are directly concerned, were invited to participate parti-cipate in the discussion. Special guests Included, Mayor Arnold E. Anderson, Principal Pratt M. Berbers of the high school, together to-gether with Travis Nelson, Sue Ellen Bulloch, Jean Watson and Bonnie Magleby of the student body; Marian Hahne, coordinator coordinat-or of the Coordinating Council, and Therol MsArthur, chairman of the recreation committee. The discussion was devoted to: 1, is there a need for a youth center in Cedar City; 2, what type could we operate; 3, what would be the cost; 4, how could it be financed. A very interesting meeting was conducted. The students expressed expres-sed themselves freely and contributed contri-buted greatly to the discussion. The mayor was very helpful in discussing possibilities and financial fi-nancial limitations of the city. Mr. McArthur reported the activities acti-vities of the recreation committee commit-tee in this direction and was helpful in coordinating the efforts ef-forts of the recreation committee and the youth committee. Worthwhile Discussion All avenues were not explored at this meeting but it was thought to be a very worthwhile discussion. Chairman Dalley set the date for the next meeting for Nov. 19. He asked the students stu-dents to discuss the problem in the teenagers as possible and try to crystallze their thinking for the next meeting. He promised to work with the youth, the mayor and recreation committee as closely as possible. The new committee, formerly Juvenile Protection committee, was organized early in the spring with Mr. Dalley appointed as chairman. The need for such a committee was felt by several groups in the community and was brought to the attention of the central committee of the Coordinating Cuncil. At this time a committee was appointed with a membership covering a cross section of the town and with the primary objective of aiding the youth of the community. The committee includes, besides be-sides Mr. Dalley, Ethel Farns-worth Farns-worth of the central committee of the Coordinating Council; Ar-va Ar-va Cloward of the PTA, Paul Dahl, Father R. E. Harmon, Ru-lan Ru-lan Woodbury, Gall Duncan, Smoot Seaman and Sharon Bulloch. |
