Utah government officials, including in-cluding the state road commission, commis-sion, had been determined to have all routes of the interstate system lead into the Salt Lake area. Southern Utah leaders, long aware of the efforts to syphon all traffic and other developments de-velopments into the populous counties of north, with a constant con-stant ignoring of needs of the other sections of the state, were sure that a fight would be made to change the route more to the advantage of the northern nor- Ion of the state. However, they fear that if this fight is carried too far it will result in the loss to Utah of the highway connection connec-tion entirely. In an attempt to prevent such selfish effort from resuling in such a loss. Chambers Cham-bers of Commerce and other civic civ-ic groups of southern Utah, ae rallying their support for the highway as designated by the Federal authorities. The recommendations made by Utah would have had the East-West East-West highway follow the route approved, the only logical route, until it passed Green River. However, How-ever, the reccomendation was that at this point the highway! should r.wing back north to turn the flow cf traffic to Salt Lake City and vicinity. The ffderal government, however, how-ever, approved maintaining a I southwesterly route, which will connect with Hikhway 91 at Cove Fort. This was done be-j be-j cause It meets defense needs by providing a short, direct rou'e 'to the coast, without duplicating I highway service that had already al-ready been provided In the Interstate Inter-state program for the northern part of the state. The highway as aproved by 4he U. S. Bureau of Public Roads, will enter Utah on the present ! U. S. Highway 50 from Grand I Junction, Colo., and follow U. S. 50 across the Green river. Four I miles south of Woodside, Emery I County, it will turn west to Cas-I Cas-I tie Daie, Emory County. From Castle Dale, the route I will follow Utah 10 through Emery County, across Fishlake National Forest via Sallna Canyon Can-yon to Salina on U. S. Highway 89. The route will then follow U. S. 89 to Richfield and on to1 the Junction of Utah Highway 13, j Just north of Sevier. It will tallow tal-low Utah 13 to Cove Fort and U-S. U-S. Highway 91. |
