Show Parks Executive Assures Completion oi Cedar Canyon Road While Visiting Here This Week People of Cedar City were assured as-sured by the director of tne wa- j tional Park Service that comple-' tion of the Cedar-Long Valley j highway over Cedar Mountain to an oil surfaced standard would come in the very near future. National Park Service director Conrad L. Wlrth, meeting with members of local civic groups Monday, pointed out that it is the plan of the service to com- plete all park development and park approach roads already under un-der way before any new construction con-struction is started. The Cedar canyon road, leading to the Cedar Ce-dar Breaks and on to highway 89, has been in the process of development de-velopment for some time, and Mr. Wirth stated that local people peo-ple could rest assured that completion com-pletion of the highway would be rushed as rapidly as funds can be made available. The road has been constructed except for a section connecting with highway 89, and this is already al-ready under contract The next step after the contract is completed, com-pleted, would be to oil surface the entire highway, including the road into the Cedar Breaks National monument. Mr. Wirth, speaking before the combined civic groups of , Cedar City, outlined some of the problems prob-lems of the National Park Service, Ser-vice, and pointed out that the dual purpose of the service, "to conserve the park areas in their natural state, and yet permit the greatest possible use of these areas," creates one of the great-jest great-jest "headaches" of the administrators adminis-trators of the service. To preserve the areas would not be difficult if it were not for the fact that they must be made available to the people of the nation for maximum max-imum use. Mr. Wirth, together with assistant as-sistant director Ronald F. Lee, M. R. Tillotson, regional director, direct-or, Region Three, Santa Fe, N. M., and Paul R. Franke, superintendent super-intendent of Zion and Bryce Canyon Can-yon national parks, were guests jf the Cedar City civic clubs at a luncheon meeting held at El Escalante hotel Monday noon. Each of the three other guests spoke briefly before Director Wirth outlined the National Parks Service, policies and prob-, lems. M. A. Cowley, president of the Lions club, presided at the meeting meet-ing and Dr. J. S. Prestwich acted as master of ceremonies. Musical entertainment included numbers by the national recognized American Legion auxiliary trio and the Lions quartet. The national parks leaders were on a tour of the parks and monuments in this area. They had visited Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon national parks and Cedar Breaks national monument, before be-fore coming to Cedar City. They visited Zion National park following fol-lowing the luncheon here. |
