Show Bichard Heywood Top Musician At Summer Camp Richard Heywood, promising Cedar City trumpet player, returned re-turned home trjis week after making a very commendable showing at the Utah State Agricultural Ag-ricultural college music clinic at ' Logan. Richard attended the 12th annual Summer School camp at Logan, along with outstanding music students from Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada, and was recognized as one of the best at the school. The young Cedar City musician, musi-cian, who played in the Cedar City high school band last winter, win-ter, while a student in the Junior Jun-ior high school, participated in both band and orchestra work at the camp, and on a basis of tryouts won the position of solo cornet In both organizations. ' In addition he was one of two students selected to play solos at a combined choir, orchestra and band concert presented at the close of the camp. For his solo number Richard played "Castles in the Air," by Clay Smith. Richard Rich-ard is the 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Heywood of Ce-day Ce-day City. The band at the camp was directed di-rected by Dr. Frank Simon, former for-mer solo cornetist and assistant conductor of the famous Sousa band. The orchestra conductor was James Sample, conductor of the Portland Symphony orchestra. orches-tra. During the two week camp the ' young musicians received some very intensive training. Including his work in both orchestra and band young Heywood spent seven se-ven hours daily in intensive training during the two week period of the camp. |
