Show Student Teachers Gain Experience In Reading Projects A series of demonstrations followed fol-lowed by critiques, gives students stu-dents in elementary education at Branch Agricultural college an opportunity to see at first hand how children are taught to read. In an upper division course in the teaching of reading Prof. Gwyn R. Clark's students visit various grades of the elementary elemen-tary schools of Cedar City and each student also does some teaching of reading himself. Included In-cluded in the series of demonstrations demon-strations by experienced teachers teach-ers are teaching oral reading, reading for ideas, using basic readers, critical reading, and graded reading material for various var-ious age levels. Students of the class, through the cooperation of the Cedar ele-mentary ele-mentary schools attend various 'class sessions to observe. The following class period the teacher teach-er whose work was observed discusses dis-cusses her techniques and methods meth-ods before the class. As laboratory work in the class each student spends an hour per week teaching students to read under the supervision of Mrs. Clark and the regular classroom teachers. The purpose of the various vari-ous reading projects is to help the elementary students Improve both their silent and oral reading. |
