Show Large Contingent of Basketball Hopefuls Appear onH. S. Hardcourt Ray Englestead, basketball coach at the Cedar City High School welcomed approximately 50 junior and senior sen-ior students in the initial tryouts for the 1955-56 squad Monday evening. Of the 50 hoop hopefuls that turned out Monday Englestead En-glestead has six returning lettermen from last year's squad. They are Sheldon Hefner, Otis McCall, Gordon Slack, Kenneth Ken-neth Griener, Daniel Webster and Terry Rosenberg. All six are seniors sen-iors this season. The 50 men have been working hard this week to show their worth to Coach Englestead who must cut his squad early in order to prepare for the opening preseason pre-season games. First game on the schedule this seson pits the Red-men Red-men against Richfield High at the C S U fieldhouse on Friday, Dec. 2, or a week from Friday. Two Team Roster Coach Engjestead indicated that he will probably cut his squad to 12 men this season and he will also carry a junior varsity var-sity team. ror the past week Coach Englestead En-glestead has been working with the sophomore students and the junior varsity group and by Friday Fri-day of last week had cut the squad to 18. He will probably make further cuts as the season games near. Because of a state ruling by the Utah High School Activities Association As-sociation basketball tryouts can not start until after the completion comple-tion of the football season. With the state finals being played Saturday, Sat-urday, Nov. 19, the first call for i his season's team could not be issued until Monday. Another thing to plague Coach Englestead is the fact that the I schools have a three-day holiday for Thanksgiving. Students were not in school Thursday and will not be Friday and Saturday. Practice Prac-tice wUl undoubtedly be held on Friday and possibly Saturday, however, to give the prospective players an opportunity to show their best. Cuts in the squad will be made early next week the coach indicated. A complete pre-season schedule and a Dixie Division schedule affords af-fords fans an opportunity to see the Redmcn on the home court more than usual this season. Schedule of Games As mentioned before the Red-men Red-men open the season against Richfield on the home court on Friday, Dec. 2. On Saturday, Doc. 3 the Redmen travel over the mountain to tangle with Piute Hich School at Circleville. The fi'lowing Wednesday, Dec. 7. the first in a two game pre season schedule again Parowan Rams will be played in the fieldhouse. On Friday. Dec. 9, the Redmen again cross over to Highway S9 to meet Panguitch High School. On Dec. 16 and 17 the Cedar City Redmen and the Parowan Rams will entertain two northern teams in a popular four way preseason pre-season contest. On Dec. 16 Cedar will meet Ben Lomond High of Ogden and Parowan will meet Jordan High School, both Class A school, in the Parowan gymnasium. gymnas-ium. Saturday, Dec. 17, the four teams wUl move to Cedar City and the fieldhouse where Parowan Paro-wan will then be matched with Ben Lomond in the opener and the Redmen will tackle Jordan. On Wednesday, Dec. 21 Millard Eagles will pit their strength against the Redmen on the local f Innr nnH rw TK utr rv no the Redmen will move to Parowan Paro-wan for the second in a two-game series against the Rams. The final pre-season game on the home court will pit the Red-men Red-men against Panguitch on Wednesday, Wed-nesday, Dec. 28. After that game the Redmen go on the road, meeting meet-ing Spanish Fork at that place on the following evening, Dec. 29 and then moving into Fillmore for a game with the Millard High School on the 30th. The Redmen will open up the league season on the locr.' floor Jan. 6. entertaining Boyd "Goon-ie" "Goon-ie" Adams and the Kanab Cowboys. |
