Show Tuberculosis Aid Funds Sought By Association The infectious disease we call tuberculosis has had many names in Its long history. The Greeks had a word for it phthisis phthi-sis which means a consumption. The earl Hindus called It by a word with the same meaning, as did the people of many other countries, both ancient and modern. mod-ern. "Consumption" was a good word to describe the wasting away of the body caused by disease di-sease of the lungs. But it didn't cover the situation when the di-sease di-sease attacked other organs of the body. The disease masqueraded masquerad-ed behind many names, and many different symptoms. It was way back In the seventeenth seven-teenth century that medical men first discovered that "tubercles" or tiny nodules In the Jungs were always found In consumption. It took many more years to discover dis-cover that these tubercles were typical of a whole group of conditions con-ditions that doctors had thought were separate diseases. The name "tuberculosis" did not come Into common use until the beginning of the 20th century. Pulmonary tuberculosis', the old "Consumption," is still the most common form of TB. But the germs that cause tuberculosis tubercle bacilli can attack any part of the body. The disease effects hundreds of thousands of our fellow Americans. It is estimated es-timated that 1,200,000 people now require medical supervision because be-cause they have TB in either active ac-tive or inactive form. Close to 100.000 people develop this contagious con-tagious disease, each year. The Tuberculosis Association throughout the United States is working to break this seemingly seeming-ly endless chain of infection that is so costly in money, in human suffering and in lives. Through the annual Christmas Seal Sale we can all help bring closer the day when the word "tuberculosis" will be obsolete. Residents of Iron County received re-ceived in the mail Wednesday a letter and accompanying Christmas Christ-mas seals. The committee In charge urges that the citizenry cooperate in this annual project by returning the enclosed envelope envel-ope and contribution as soon as possible. |
