Show After the fhnt (From the Fish and Game bulletin published by the Utah Fish and Game Department.) Can you tell a red pig from a pheasant a white faced bull from deer moose from an elk or an elk from a deer? Well, maybe you can but there are some who cannot. A few years ago a hunter stalking pheasants near Provo killed kill-ed a ml shoat as it ran through the deep grass. "It really looked like a pheasant," he said. l-nter five purebred Ilerefords were shot in northern Utah. Someone thought their bald faces looked like the rear-end of a deer. A wandering moose was killed in Farm-ington Farm-ington canyon. Some freak thought it looked like a deer. An early hunt in Daggett County this year resulted in the slaughter of a moose. This, together with the three stacked up last year, brings to a total of four known moose to have been killed by elk and deer hunters. The mad scramble for elk permits in Utah this year was almost fantastic. For everyone who gets a permit, there are 13 who get their money back and no permit. "We want more elks," sportsmen demand. Under the present conditions, these cannot be furnished. There is not enough range not enough feed. Yet probably 400 to 500 more hunters could bag an elk each year if the unnncc-essary unnncc-essary slaughter of the majestic wapiti were stopped. From survey work and careful estimates there are indications that T00 elk are killed annually and wasted. Some are lost because hunters, shoot, wound and do not follow up to see if they hit. Many are wasted however, during the deer hunt by careless or ignorant hunters who cannot' toll a deer from an elk. In order to get some idea of what the unnecessary kill is like, after deer hunting in Cache County in 1951 the ranges were carefully ridden. Forty-seven elk were found dead. In 15)52 the experience was repeated on Cache and 41 were found killed by deer hunters. In 1934 after thorough rides on the Ogden River Drainage, the Hcaston Reserve and Fish Lake area, 59 elk were found killed and wasted. In 195-1. a not her complete ride of Ogden River revealed another 10 elk killed and left lying. Fourteen were found at ML Ncbo the same year. If someone has an answer to stop this unnecessary slaughter this terrible waste we would like to have it. |
