Show Broncos Return Axe With Final Season Triumph Coach Bruce Osborne and the College of Southern Utah Broncos returned from St. George Friday and the final game of the current gridiron season, with a second victory over the Dixie Rebels, 26 to 20. It was the first win from the Broncos In the last five starts and the third victory for the squad this year. The broncos finished up the season with a three win and five loss record. Only one victory was scored in the Intermountain Col-Collegiate Col-Collegiate Athletic conference race. That was the first game between the Broncos and the Rebels Re-bels on Oct. 1. In that game the Broncos downed the Rebels 20 to 13. The other victory for coach Osborne's charges came in a non-1 conference game with Dugway Proving Grounds. In that game the Broncos won by a score of 20 to 0. Important Victory Although nothing more than the "Axe," symbol of rivalry between be-tween Dixie and CSU, was at stake, nevertheless the final game victory was important to the Bronco squad. Hanging up their shoes at the end of the season, sea-son, a loss at this point after once scoring a win over Dixie, would have ended a season that fans surejy would have labeled as "becoming progressively worse." Friday's victory, however, disproved dis-proved that point. The victory points up the fact that as a rule the I C A C this year is probably, all around, stronger than usual. Friday the Broncos pushed over three touchdowns in the first half of play and held a 20 to 0 lead at the midway marker. It was in the fourth quarter that the Rebels, In an almost exact duplicate of the first meeting of the two teams, took to the air and a.lmost caught the Broncos. Dixie scored first in the third quarter of plav and the Broncos pushed over their final score of the game early in the fourth period per-iod and Dixie retaliated with two TDs of its own in the final canto to rush within one touchdown of the Broncos. Plagued With Injuries Coach Osborne, working with a comparatively smal club this season, regarding the number of men, was plagued through most of the season with Injuries. In the opening game of the season against Fhoenix Junior College the Broncos took a shellacking, shel-lacking, 30 to 0, but fortunitely emerged without injuries. The second game was against Dugway Dug-way and the Broncos won by a score of 20 to 0. The opening I C A C game was on the local fie.'d against the Dixie Rebels and the Broncos emerged from that one with a 20 to 13 victory and high hopes for honors this season were heard from, all sources. Then the Broncos traveled to Rexburg, Idaho to drop a 13 to 0 contest against the Ricks Col-lege Col-lege Vikings. The first of the key injuries began at that point and plagued the Bronco club through its next three games, which were lost respectively to Weber. 30 to 25; Snow. 13 to 7, and to Westminster, 37 to 6 Friday's victory at St. George put the Broncos back in the win column to close the mediocre season. |
