Show Cedar City High School Basketball Squad Trimmed in Final Season Cut Kay Englestead, coach of the Cedar City High School Redmen basketball team, announced this week that he made the final cut in his squad for this year and has been hard at work this week, in preparation for the opening1 game of the season. That game will be played in the College of Southern Utah fieldhouse Friday. Dec. 3, at 8 p. m. against the Richfield Wild cats, coached by Darw in Wood- bury, a former high school and B A C star. The cut to 13 men was rather surprising for most fans of the area. Englestead was confronted with a rather serious problem of building for the coming year. Out of a 12-man squad last year, 11 men were returning and nine of those 11 were seniors. With i nine seniors returning he faced the problem of training and building juniors and sophomores for the coming years. Team Members The names of the 13 squad members as selected last week are as follows, with the designa tion of class behind the player: Terry Bolander, sr.; Richard Iley-wood, Iley-wood, sr.; Gayle Fife, sr.; Roger Haycock, sr.; Jay Perkins, Sr.; Ronald Melntyre, Sr.; Jerry Frame, Sr.; Cordon Slack, jr.; Dan Webster, jr.; Sheldon 1 Iff f-rer, f-rer, jr.; Terry Rosenberg, jr. Otis McCall. Jr., and Kenneth C.reiner. jr. The new members of the squad this year are Greiner, Webster, Rosenberg, and Ilcffner. , Frame and Fife were elected by their team members to serve as co-captains of the Redmen this year. According to Coach Knglestead, two of last year's squad members, mem-bers, both seniors this year, were dropped. Reason for this was the fact that the squad would have been overburdened if the two seniors had remained. Although the ability of the two boys was las good or even slightly better, the fact remained that the reserve re-serve strength this year must bo used to build for next year. J. D. k'orry and Herb Corry, are the two j seniors. Prepare for Opener I This week the squad has been! working hard in preparation for the opening game Friday night. Local fans will have an opportunity oppor-tunity to see the Redmen in action ac-tion in their initial game of the Ipre-season series which features 'some of the strongest teams in the state. As pointed out by Coach Englestead, the Redmen should know their comparable strength with that of other Class B schools by the time league play rolls around. The Redmen are equipped this year with a good display of height, a lot of speed and a good hustling ball club. Melntyre, a strong defensive man, may develop de-velop into one of the offensive potentials under the basket this year with his height. Additional Addition-al heighth is added with the ad dit ion of Webster to the squad who stands six foot five inches. Frame, probably one of the most potent scorers on the squad, reaches beyond six feet as dues Rosenberg," McCall arid lleffnei. Speed is acceniuated with Hey-wood, Hey-wood, Bolander, Haycock, Slack and Greiner. An outstanding play-maker of last year's top five was Fife who will probably lead from the guard position again this year, and it is also expected that he will add a strong scoring punch to the squad this year. Perkins, a rugged individual under the basket, adds fight and determination determin-ation as an outstanding competitor compe-titor to the well rounded squad. |
