Show CEDAR JOINS IN GROWTH I Bell System Tells Great Expansion Cedar City is served by 280G telephones and 20,585 conversations are handled on the average day, Dean G. Williams, manager for Mountain States Telephone Co. revealed re-vealed today. The local figures were supplied coincident with the publication of the Bell System's annual survey, "Telephone "Tele-phone Statistics of the World." This report shows that the United States has one telephone for every three persons, or over half of the world's 91.5 million mil-lion telephones, on Jan. 1, 1955. The number of telephones everywhere is constantly growing. grow-ing. About 35 lelephones have been added in Cedar City since the beginning of 1955, Mr. Williams Wil-liams said. And the total number of Jocal and long distance calls increased 81 per cent in the same period. Data Included in the world report re-port shows that Iceland has replaced re-placed the United States as the talklngest nation in the world. Canada, with 417 conversations per capita, is on first place for the third consecutive year. Iceland, Ice-land, 391 conversations per capita, cap-ita, nosed out the United States which had 393. The Netherlands installed its one millionth telephone in 1951. bringing the total number of countries on the "more than a million" list to 12. The list includes in-cludes the United States, The United Kingdom, Canada, German Ger-man Federal Republic, France, Japan, Sweden, Italy, Australia, Switzerland, Argentina and the Netherlands', in that order. Telephone service in the United States is supplied by 4,800 private companies, together with thousands thous-ands of connecting rural or farm er lines and systems. At the beginning of 1955 a customer cus-tomer in the United States could call any one of 91 million telephones tele-phones in more than 110 countries coun-tries or areas, including the United Unit-ed States. Overseas service was extended to three points during 1954 Goa in Portugese India, British Malaya, including Singapore, Singa-pore, and Thailand. In 1955, Ascension As-cension Island in the South Atlantic, At-lantic, and French Equatorial Africa were added. These figures are for the year 1954, since it takes almost a year j to select information from more than 250 governments and com- panics throughout the world. |
