Show Research Aimed At Improving Basic Curricula By L. C. Miles Principal Junior High School Growing out of the Kellogg foundation research project that has been going on in the Iron County Schools during the past two or three years, the Junior high and Senior high schools and College of Southern Utah are all cooperating in a vertical study which will' bring together in weekly study group the teachers in four special fields, including Language Arts, Mathematics, Physical Education, Industrial Arts, and Homemaking. The main objective of the studies will be to evolve a development devel-opment curriculum in each field based on the normal growth and development of children. Individual Individ-ual differences both In mental and physical capacities wil.l be a major factor in such a study and an effort will be made to plan for the fast, as well as the slow student, stu-dent, so that ?aoh may be able to realize his full potentialities. There has been a tendency in the past for the college to blame the shortcomings of students on , the high school, the high schoc.' on the junior ;ii?h and right on down the line. It is felt that a program of this type will do much to not only coordinate the work of the various levels, thereby there-by improving teaching practices, but also greatly strengthen public pub-lic and professional relations. The groups are taking the first two or three meetings to explore their fields after which severaj meetings will be spent on the study of literature now available in the areas unlor consideration. It is the feeling of those participating par-ticipating that this project should be continuous rrom year to year, with the idea in mind of utilizing utiliz-ing summer school sabbatical leaves and other means for further fur-ther study and improvement of the curricula. Dr. Marie Hughes of the University Uni-versity of Utah, Mary McMillan, supervisor of Iron County Schools; Supt. Ianthus Wright and Director Direct-or Royden Braithwalte are acting as counsultants for the action research. |
