The I cheerleaders supported the athletic teams and helped foster student spirit. They also were awarded five first place trophies for competitions, including a first place finish in the Rocky Mountain Regional Competition at Alta High School. U of U awards degrees to 5,000 a rods at Huntsman The University of Utah presented degrees to most of its 5,000 graduates Friday, June 14, during the 122nd annual commencement exercises in the Jon M Huntsman Center The procession of degree candidates, can-didates, dignitaries, and faculty began at 8:30 a.m. with President Chase N. Peterson presiding. Dr. Amitai Etzioni, university professor ;it The George Washington University Univer-sity in Washington, DC., delivered the commencement address. Etzioni received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Of the 5,000 who were awarded degrees, 3,616 were undergraduates. Women numbered 1,555 compared to 2,050 men. Graduate degree recipients totaled 1,384, including 888 master, 128 juris doctor, 105 M.D., and 263 Ph.D. Social and behavioral science was the largest college with a graduate total of 1 ,238. The smallest was the Graduate School of Architecture with 45 degree recipients. reci-pients. The longest time of attendance to obtain a bachelor's degree was 43 years. The shortest was one year. The average age of undergraduates is 27.7, their grade point average is 3.11, and it took an average 6.4 years to complete a degree. One student also took 43 years to complete an advanced degree, while the shortest term of study was two years. The average age of graduate degree recipients is 34.9, and it took 8.9 years to finish their degree requirements. re-quirements. Honorary doctorates were awarded to Spencer F. Eccles, noted Utah businessman, philanthropist, and U. of U. benefactor, Doctor of Laws; Larry H. Miller, auto industry in-dustry executive and owner of the National Basketball Association's Utah Jazz, Doctor of Laws; John A. Moran, CEO and board chair of Dyson-Kissner-Moran, one of the nation's 30 largest privately held corporations, Doctor of Laws; Chase N. Peterson, outgoing president presi-dent of the U., Doctor of Laws; Grethe B. Peterson, civic activist and state leader on issues affecting children and families. Doctor of Humane Letters. |
