Show Olympic crowd shouts, '2002' ed group. The huge crowd was totally silent. Majarus rallied to the task of salvaging the day and within moments the crowd was chanting, "2002,2002." Olympic steeplechase runner, Bountiful's Henry Marsh, had kicked kick-ed off Saturday's activities by running runn-ing with an Olympic torch from the State Capitol to the City-County Building. Although he was disappointed, disap-pointed, he said he believes Utah can secure the games for 2002. "When everyone gets back we'll plan our strategy for the next bid. The referendum the people voted for was for 1998 and 2002." He said the committee will "get back to the people to be sure they understand the next step in the process. pro-cess. University of Utah head basketball basket-ball coach Rick Majerus led the anxious crowd in cheers as they awaited the verdict of the Olympic Committee from International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch. When the big moment came, the group stood shoulder to shoulder around a small television screen to view the historic moment live from Birmingham, England. Moments before the announcement came, Majerus led the crowd in a cheer and admonished them to "show them who deserves this bid." As Samaranch mounted the stage, Salt Lakers waited in breathless anticipation. an-ticipation. Many stood with fingers crossed high above their heads. When Majarus shouted his instructions, instruc-tions, a deafening roar went up from the crowd. It was the last cheer heard from the Olympic well-wishers. well-wishers.
