Show to think that the schools were supporting sup-porting a religious service, so it obviously ob-viously can't be held on Sunday any more. The fact that we have to induce the students to come by handing out yearbooks after the service must be an indication of the importance that this meeting holds in their lives. I really am not against motherhood and apple pie, but come on now let's be honest with ourselves. Who needs baccalaureate and what real purpose does it serve? Below, find my name plus the names of others who agree with me. Thank you. Carol Hellewell Edith L. Baker Dan C. Baker Cathy Taylor ! Abolish VHS baccalaureates Editor: This spring my fourth child graduated from Viewmont High, and I have four more yet to graduate from that institution. I would like to call upon the school system to abolish the tradition of having a baccalaureate service in connection with graduation. At this meeting, which I have just come from as I write this, the principal prin-cipal declared that the tradition of baccalaureate was to give the senior class one last opportunity to "get together again" before graduation. I had to laugh. If the senior class wants to get together, they have plenty of opportunities that at least seem to serve some function. Commencement exercises serve to award, at least ceremonially, the diplomas, and to give the graduates all the advice and counsel that they can probably stand. The awards night serves to honor those who have achieved academically. The all-night graduation party gives die seniors a way to celebrate together. Will somebody please tell me what the purpose (the real purpose) of baccalaureate is? My encyclopedia tells me that it was originally a religious service for the graduates, usually held on the Sunday prior to commencement. commence-ment. At Viewmont, baccalaureate has always been held, at least to my knowledge, on a Sunday until this year. Of course, things being as they are, we wouldn't want anyone |
